- Abstract:
- In recent years, severe straining has attracted the attention of many researchers as a new and efficient method for improving the mechanical and microstructural properties of low-carbon steel sheets. In this study, the effect of confined groove pressing (CGP) and rolling on the mechanical properties and microstructure of low-carbon steel sheets was investigated. The samples were prepared in five conditions from 0.50 passes to 2.50 passes of CGP and then subjected to different percentages of rolling (0%, 20%, and 40%). The microstructure of the samples was analyzed by optical microscopy and changes in grain size and elongation in different areas were evaluated. The fracture surface images of the tensile samples showed a change in fracture behavior from soft to brittle with increasing number of passes and rolling percentage. The highest tensile strength was obtained in 2.50 passes and 40% rolling and the highest Vickers hardness was obtained under the same conditions. Analysis of the results showed that grain size reduction, conversion of small-angle boundaries to large-angle boundaries, and dislocation locking were the main factors in improving the mechanical properties of the material. This study demonstrates the positive effects of CGP and rolling on strain uniformity, increased strength and hardness, and improved mechanical properties of low-carbon steel. Finally, this research confirms that the combined processes of limited groove pressing and rolling not only allow the achievement of desirable properties in low-carbon steel sheets, but also provide greater control over the microstructure of the materials
