Synthesis, Characterization and Surface Modification of Iron Oxide Nanoparticles for Biomedical Applications

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Mahmoudi, Morteza (Author) ; Simchi, Abdolreza (Supervisor) ; Imani, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Bagheri, Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPION) with proper surface coatings are increasingly being evaluated for clinical applications such as hyperthermia, drug delivery, magnetic resonance imaging, transfection, and cell/protein separation. Since the particles with various sizes exhibit different flow rates in the same environment (same capillary size), it is essential to use particles of a desirable size for targeted drug delivery and imaging. Particles of different sizes may be exposed to different viscosities and behave differently, particularly with regard to their velocities as they move through capillaries. In the present work, SPION with different size, purity, shape and...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Esmaeili Rad, Nasim (Author) ; Borghei, Mehdi (Supervisor) ; Vossoughi, Manoochehr (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The removal of ethylene glycol, one of the most widely used antifreez, with moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) was studied. Beside of ethylene glycol, the synthetic wastewater contained molasses and other salts as nutrient source. The packings were composed of polyethylene and shaped like small cylinders with a surface area of 500 m2 per m3 bulk volume of carriers(KMT). The COD of the feed was adjusted by varying the ratio of ethylene glycol to molasses. The total COD was 1252.5, 1345 and 1500 mg/L. The resulted showed that when the biofilm grows on the packings and its thickness is good enough, the removal efficiency increased. The increase was attributed to higher concentration of biomass...

Investigation of the Liquid Viscosity Effect on the Rising Bubble Motion (Effect of Ethylene Glycol Concentration on Terminal Velocity)

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Asadi Zeidabadi, Fateme (Author) ; Bastani, Dariush (Supervisor) ; Lotfi, Marzieh (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Surface phenomena is one of the fundamental branches of science that has many applications in industries related to multiphase processes. One of the most important issues of this knowledge is inter-phase transport phenomena in contacting gas - liquid and liquid – liquid systems. Multiphase systems generally include dispersions such that in many cases are associated with the relative motion between the continuous and dispersed phase. One of the most widely used inter-phase flow systems is dispersion of gas bubbles in the bulk of liquid. The overall efficiency of these systems is often determined by the characteristics of the gas phase. In order to understand the dynamic behavior of such...

The tests were done at high temperature about 88ºC. Two different industrial corrosion inhibitors were examined in these conditions....

Design and Optimization of Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) for Organic Pollution

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nabavian, Alborz (Author) ; Vossoughi, Manouchehr (Supervisor) ; Seif Kordi, Ali Akbar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
A Microbial fuel cell is a Bioreactor in which chemical bands are broken and their energy convert to electricity by bio-catalysts such as microorganisms and enzymes. Depletion of energy resources encouraged researchers to investigate microbial fuel cell as a power bio-resource. MFCs produce electricity or hydrogen without any net carbon emission. Nowadays, real applications of microbial fuel cells are limited because their power density level is very low (about 1000 mW/m2). Many research projects are running to modify MFCs operation and optimize its costs. The most important application of MFCs is electricity production, hydrogen production, waste water treatment and BOD5 biosensor. In this...

The effects of gamma irradiation dose, percentage of polyethylene glycol, and barium titanate composition on the swelling ratio and gel content were investigated. It was observed that the amount of gel content with the addition of polyethylene glycol and barium titanate nanoparticles reduces the gel content and...

    , Article Ceramics International ; Volume 39, Issue 7 , 2013 , Pages 8377-8384 ; 02728842 (ISSN) Naghibi, S ; Madaah Hosseini, H. R ; Faghihi Sani, M. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
Colloidal stability of dextran (Dex) and Dex/poly ethylene glycol (PEG) coated TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) were investigated. The particles were successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal assisted sol-gel technique. The results of Ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectrophotometry showed that Dex and PEG additions during hydrothermal process (HTP) led to the formation of long-term (more than 60 days) stable colloids, while the addition of dispersants after HTP did not have a significant impact on the colloidal stability of NPs. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) analyses proved that PEG and/or Dex coated NPs had less crystallinity than the plain TiO2. Fourier...

The extraction procedure was performed on a commercially available 96-well plate system. The extraction module consisted of 96 pieces of 1cm×3cm of cylindrically shaped stainless steel meshes. The prepared meshes were fixed in a home-made polytetrafluoroethylene-based constructed ninety-six holes block for possible simultaneous immersion of meshes into the center of individual wells. Dodecyl methacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate was copolymerized as a monolithic polymer and placed in the cylindrically shaped...
