    , Article Ceramics International ; Volume 39, Issue 7 , 2013 , Pages 8377-8384 ; 02728842 (ISSN) Naghibi, S ; Madaah Hosseini, H. R ; Faghihi Sani, M. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
Colloidal stability of dextran (Dex) and Dex/poly ethylene glycol (PEG) coated TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) were investigated. The particles were successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal assisted sol-gel technique. The results of Ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectrophotometry showed that Dex and PEG additions during hydrothermal process (HTP) led to the formation of long-term (more than 60 days) stable colloids, while the addition of dispersants after HTP did not have a significant impact on the colloidal stability of NPs. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) analyses proved that PEG and/or Dex coated NPs had less crystallinity than the plain TiO2. Fourier...

    Abstract
The reaction pathway (including the transition state) of ethylene addition to permanganate (MnO4-) in the presence of ethylene glycol (EG) has been qualitatively and quantitatively studied by means of B3LYP/6-311++G* theoretical analysis. Interestingly, by cluster formation of the EG with permanganate, oxidation reaction becomes thermodynamically and kinetically more favorable. The influences of electron-withdrawing as well as electron-donating substituents were also explored. Results of the quantum theory of atoms in molecules and natural bond orbital analyses revealed that [3 + 2] addition reaction of alkenes in the presence of EG as hydrogen bonding donor to MnO4- becomes more exothermic....

    Abstract
Nanofluid is the term applied to a suspension of solid, nanometer-sized particles in conventional fluids; the most prominent features of such fluids include enhanced heat characteristics, such as convective heat transfer coefficient, in comparison to the base fluid without considerable alterations in physical and chemical properties. In this study, nanofluids of aluminum oxide and copper oxide were prepared in ethylene glycol separately. The effect of forced convective heat transfer coefficient in turbulent flow was calculated using a double pipe and plate heat exchangers. Furthermore, we calculated the forced convective heat transfer coefficient of the nanofluids using theoretical...

    Abstract
For risk free application of nanoparticles in life science, energy and the environment, it is essential to understand their biological fate and potential toxicity. The application of iron oxide nanoparticles for drug delivery has been one of the most promising researches in the field of nanotechnology. However, there are two major problems associated with magnetically targeted deliveries that still need close attention: • As the drug is coated on to the particle surfaces, there is the possibility of faster drug release (Burst Effect). Therefore, after reaching to the specific site, there is very low amount of drug for delivery. To overcome this problem, some researchers have used conjugation...

Synthesis, Characterization and Surface Modification of Iron Oxide Nanoparticles for Biomedical Applications

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Mahmoudi, Morteza (Author) ; Simchi, Abdolreza (Supervisor) ; Imani, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Bagheri, Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPION) with proper surface coatings are increasingly being evaluated for clinical applications such as hyperthermia, drug delivery, magnetic resonance imaging, transfection, and cell/protein separation. Since the particles with various sizes exhibit different flow rates in the same environment (same capillary size), it is essential to use particles of a desirable size for targeted drug delivery and imaging. Particles of different sizes may be exposed to different viscosities and behave differently, particularly with regard to their velocities as they move through capillaries. In the present work, SPION with different size, purity, shape and...
