    Abstract
One of the common methods used for treatment of gaseous radioactive wastes in nuclear waste management is adsorption process. Nanoporous materials have found great utility as sorption media because of their large internal surface area and more adsorption sites than other adsorbents, which caused the increasing attention of researchers to use them in the nuclear waste management. Hence in this study, the surface of nanoporous silicates of SBA-15 and MCM-41 modified with d-block elements of the periodic table such as silver, copper, zinc and nickel by wet impregnation method. After characterization by different techniques such as X-ray diffraction, nitrogen gas porosimetry, Fourier...

Study on Thermodynamics of Iodine Vapor Adsorption on Cu Nanoparticles by Different Computational Approach

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Razavi, Maliheh (Author) ; Outokesh, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Iodine isotopes are among the most significant medical radioisotopes with a wide range of applications in therapy and diagnosis. The I-131 isotope is usually synthesized by irradiation of natural tellurium in atomic reactors. But there is an alternative route in which this isotopes is produced along with two other significant medical radioisotopes (i.e. Mo-99, Xe-131) by neutronic irradiation of uranium in the reactors. To separate iodine isotopes especially in the extraction process of fission fragments, it is necessary to be selective adsorption of iodine on a selective adsorbent. One of the most selective adsorbent for this application is copper. The aim of this study is to compare the...

    Abstract
In the method treatment of thermobrachytherapy, the method of this project, simultaneously use of two processes of thermotherapy and brachytherapy is considered, which can be a more effective treatment for the destruction of tumor tissue. In thermotherapy, the temperature of the tissue is artificially raised to a temperature that leads to cell dysfunction resulting in cell death. In brachytherapy, the destruction of defective tissue is done by placing a source in the tissue. In the present project, we supposed to consider both mechanisms simultaneously for treatment at the same time. In this project, radioactive material 125I is used as a source of radiation emission for brachytherapy. In...

    Abstract
I-131 isotope is one of the most significant radio medicines for treatments of the thyroid cancer and nuclear tomography of thyroid. As for purification of this radioisotope several methods have been developed among which adsorption-desorption on metallic copper is the most promising. The current study is aimed at elaboration of the kinetics behavior of the different types of metallic copper for adsorption of iodine vapor. The used copper samples included plain and silica-supported Cu nanoparticles as well as micronized copper. The silica-supported Cu nanoparticles were prepared by impregnation of highly porous silica (≈500 m2/g) in Cu(NO3)2 solution, heating of the solution to above...

Synthesis of Graphene and Graphene Oxide and It’s Applications for Adsorption of Iodine

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rizehkar, Sevda Sadat (Author) ; Outokesh, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Khanchi, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Graphene is pure carbon in the form of a very thin, nearly transparent sheet, one atom thick. It is remarkably strong for its very low weight. Graphene is a novel particle that can improve adsorption properties. We use graphene for Iodine gas adsorption. Iodine-131 (usually in the chemical form of iodide) is a component of nuclear fallout, and is particularly dangerous owing to the thyroid gland's propensity to concentrate ingested iodine, where it is kept for periods longer than this isotope's radiological half-life of eight days. For this reason, if people are expected to be exposed to a significant amount of environmental radioactive iodine (iodine-131 in fallout), they may be instructed...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Moafi, Atiyeh (Author) ; Matloubi Moghadam, Firouz (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The fused pyrimidine rings have many biological applications such as antibacterial, antiviral, antitumor and anti-inflammation activity. Therefore, their synthesis has attracted many attentions. In this thesis, the synthesis of fused pyrazolopyrimidine rings through two component reaction catalyzed by iodine was investigated. In this reaction, iodine is used to active the imine bond. Low toxicity, availability, low cost and stability to air are some benefits of iodine as a Lewis acid leading to widespread application of I2 in many different organic transformation. Mild reaction conditions, high yields and lower reaction times are among the main advantage of these reactions.

    Abstract
Perovskite solar cells suffer from various instabilities on all time scales. Some of them are driven by light, in particular when employing compounds with mixed halides. Such light soaking effects have been observed to result in performance changes of solar-cell devices. They have also been spectroscopically investigated in detail on films, where the formation of a low-gap iodine-rich phase, seen as a red shift of the PL, has been found to be responsible for a reduced open-circuit voltage. However, studies synchronously examining device performance and its relation to spectroscopy data are scarce. Here, we perform an in operando study, where we investigate the changes of open-circuit voltage...

Vapor assisted deposition of alkaline doped perovskites: Pure phase formation of CsxMA1−xPbI3

    , Article Electrochimica Acta ; Volume 259 , 2018 , Pages 485-491 ; 00134686 (ISSN) Sedighi, R ; Tajabadi, F ; Taghavinia, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2018
    Abstract
Alkaline doping (Cs, Rb) in CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPbI3) is known to enhance the stability of perovskite solar cells. The films are usually deposited using anti-solvent method, which is tricky and not applicable for large scale deposition. Besides, in case of CsxMA1−xPbI3 the amount of Cs must be carefully controlled to prevent CsI phase formation. Herein, we report an atmospheric pressure vapor assisted solution process (AP-VASP) for the growth of Cs doped MAPbI3 perovskite films that features highly uniform morphology, pin-hole free films, large grain size, as well as being scalable. The CsxMA1−xPbI3 films are formed by the reaction of Cs doped PbI2 films with MAI vapor in a simple oven. We...

The leaching kinetics of an oxide gold ore with iodide/iodine solutions

    , Article Hydrometallurgy ; Volume 113-114 , 2012 , Pages 42-50 ; 0304386X (ISSN) Baghalha, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Two types of gold ores were subjected to iodide/iodine leaching at room temperature. The effects of three factors, including ore type (a carbonaceous and an oxide gold ores), iodide/iodine concentration, and the presence of oxygen in solution on gold leaching performance were investigated. The carbonaceous ore showed only 20% gold extraction, since gold-iodide complexes readily adsorb on organic matter. In contrast, gold extraction from the oxide ore in a solution containing 20 g/L iodide and 4 g/L iodine reached 77% in 6 h and 89% in 24 h. With iodate as the oxidant, no gold could be leached in 48 h. When the iodate was partially converted to iodine by adding HCl to the solution, gold...

    , Article Langmuir ; Volume 17, Issue 3 , 2001 , Pages 583-587 ; 07437463 (ISSN) Azizian, S ; Gobal, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2001
    Abstract
The decomposition of methyl iodide on Cu(110) surface gives rise to the production of methane, ethane, and ethene over a wide range of its surface coverage. In this work a reaction mechanism based on the adsorption and subsequent surface dissociation(s) of methyl iodide followed by the recombination and desorption of the surface entities are proposed on the basis of the energetic criteria provided by the unity bond index-quadratic exponential potential method. To further amplify the arguments using the calculated activation energies of the surface reactions, desorptions, etc., the Arrhenius factor is obtained by simulation of the temperature-programmed desorption patterns fitted to the...

    Abstract
Metal halide perovskite nanoparticles have recently attracted immense interest for photodetectors due to their outstanding optical and electronic properties such as high carrier diffusion length, tunable band gap (light absorption range), and high photoluminescence (PL) efficiency. Although significant progress has been achieved in the development of perovskites, their stability is yet to be addressed. To improve the stability and quantum efficiency of FAPbI3 perovskite nanocrystals, we present a room temperature protocol to fabricate fully passivated and stable FAPbI3 nanocrystals via 2D growth in the presence of amine ligands and an excess amount of the organic cations. The crystallization...

Resolving a critical instability in perovskite solar cells by designing a scalable and printable carbon based electrode-interface architecture

    Abstract
Thin-film solar cells based on hybrid organo-halide lead perovskites achieve over 22% power conversion efficiency (PCE). A photovoltaic technology at such high performance is no longer limited by efficiency. Instead, lifetime and reliability become the decisive criteria for commercialization. This requires a standardized and scalable architecture which does fulfill all requirements for larger area solution processing. One of the most highly demanded technologies is a low temperature and printable conductive ink to substitute evaporated metal electrodes for the top contact. Importantly, that electrode technology must have higher environmental stability than, for instance, an evaporated silver...

    Abstract
In this paper, different polymers are utilized for controlling the release rate of iodine in drinking water to counteract iodine deficiency. Polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride and ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer are used to fabricate polymeric reservoirs of Nal. Zero-order release kinetics with different release rates has been achieved through choosing different materials and various formulation factors. The experimental results are consistent with the expectation that by using a polymer with a greater permeability or a device with a large release area, higher release rate could be achieved

Modeling of platinum extraction from used reforming catalyst in iodine solutions

    , Article ECS Transactions ; Volume 41, Issue 17 , 2012 , Pages 45-51 ; 19385862 (ISSN) ; 9781607683070 (ISBN) Moghaddam, H. R ; Baghallha, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Platinum extraction from spent reforming catalysts in iodine solutions under atmospheric pressure and at temperatures up to 95°C was previously investigated in our group. In this system, platinum is oxidized from the spent catalyst with tri-iodide. In some of the experiments, it was observed that platinum extraction peaked and then decreased. This indicates that a precipitation reaction slowly occurs that removes the dissolved Pt ions from the solution. Power-law rate equation for the Pt extraction to PtI6 2- and the precipitation of the dissolved platinum to PtI 4(s) was implemented to model the experimental Pt extraction data. The activation energies for the platinum dissolution reaction...
