, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Soleymanpoor, Mohammad (Author) ; Hosseini, Abolfazl (Supervisor) ; Sheibani, Shahab (Supervisor) ; Poorbaygi, Hossein (Co-Supervisor) ; Mohagheghpour, Elham (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the method treatment of thermobrachytherapy, the method of this project, simultaneously use of two processes of thermotherapy and brachytherapy is considered, which can be a more effective treatment for the destruction of tumor tissue. In thermotherapy, the temperature of the tissue is artificially raised to a temperature that leads to cell dysfunction resulting in cell death. In brachytherapy, the destruction of defective tissue is done by placing a source in the tissue. In the present project, we supposed to consider both mechanisms simultaneously for treatment at the same time. In this project, radioactive material 125I is used as a source of radiation emission for brachytherapy. In...

Study on Thermodynamics of Iodine Vapor Adsorption on Cu Nanoparticles by Different Computational Approach

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Razavi, Maliheh (Author) ; Outokesh, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Iodine isotopes are among the most significant medical radioisotopes with a wide range of applications in therapy and diagnosis. The I-131 isotope is usually synthesized by irradiation of natural tellurium in atomic reactors. But there is an alternative route in which this isotopes is produced along with two other significant medical radioisotopes (i.e. Mo-99, Xe-131) by neutronic irradiation of uranium in the reactors. To separate iodine isotopes especially in the extraction process of fission fragments, it is necessary to be selective adsorption of iodine on a selective adsorbent. One of the most selective adsorbent for this application is copper. The aim of this study is to compare the...

Synthesis of Graphene and Graphene Oxide and It’s Applications for Adsorption of Iodine

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rizehkar, Sevda Sadat (Author) ; Outokesh, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Khanchi, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Graphene is pure carbon in the form of a very thin, nearly transparent sheet, one atom thick. It is remarkably strong for its very low weight. Graphene is a novel particle that can improve adsorption properties. We use graphene for Iodine gas adsorption. Iodine-131 (usually in the chemical form of iodide) is a component of nuclear fallout, and is particularly dangerous owing to the thyroid gland's propensity to concentrate ingested iodine, where it is kept for periods longer than this isotope's radiological half-life of eight days. For this reason, if people are expected to be exposed to a significant amount of environmental radioactive iodine (iodine-131 in fallout), they may be instructed...

    Abstract
This thesis encompasses two parallel, but independent subjects as follow: The first part of the thesis deals with synthesis of bimetallic Ni-Au nanoparticles (Bi Ni-Au), and application of them as electrodes in the methanol fuel cells. The Bi Ni-Au nanoparticles for this purpose were synthesized by controlled reduction of HAuCl3 and NiCl3 in the aqueous medium using NaBH4 as reductant and PVP as stabilizer, and immobilized on the surface of a glassy carbon (GC) electrode by means of Nafion polymer. The obtained electrode then was conditioned in an alkaline solution by cyclic voltammetric method in potential range 100 -700 mV (vs. Ag/AgCl). Physicochemical characterizations of the...

    Abstract
I-131 isotope is one of the most significant radio medicines for treatments of the thyroid cancer and nuclear tomography of thyroid. As for purification of this radioisotope several methods have been developed among which adsorption-desorption on metallic copper is the most promising. The current study is aimed at elaboration of the kinetics behavior of the different types of metallic copper for adsorption of iodine vapor. The used copper samples included plain and silica-supported Cu nanoparticles as well as micronized copper. The silica-supported Cu nanoparticles were prepared by impregnation of highly porous silica (≈500 m2/g) in Cu(NO3)2 solution, heating of the solution to above...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rohani, Ramezan (Author) ; Sayf Kordi, Ali Akbar (Supervisor) ; Sepehrian, Hamid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the common methods used for treatment of gaseous radioactive wastes in nuclear waste management is adsorption process. Nanoporous materials have found great utility as sorption media because of their large internal surface area and more adsorption sites than other adsorbents, which caused the increasing attention of researchers to use them in the nuclear waste management. Hence in this study, the surface of nanoporous silicates of SBA-15 and MCM-41 modified with d-block elements of the periodic table such as silver, copper, zinc and nickel by wet impregnation method. After characterization by different techniques such as X-ray diffraction, nitrogen gas porosimetry, Fourier...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Moafi, Atiyeh (Author) ; Matloubi Moghadam, Firouz (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The fused pyrimidine rings have many biological applications such as antibacterial, antiviral, antitumor and anti-inflammation activity. Therefore, their synthesis has attracted many attentions. In this thesis, the synthesis of fused pyrazolopyrimidine rings through two component reaction catalyzed by iodine was investigated. In this reaction, iodine is used to active the imine bond. Low toxicity, availability, low cost and stability to air are some benefits of iodine as a Lewis acid leading to widespread application of I2 in many different organic transformation. Mild reaction conditions, high yields and lower reaction times are among the main advantage of these reactions.
    Another part...

Interaction of ionic liquids with the surface of silica gel using nanocluster approach: A combined density functional theory and experimental study

    , Article Journal of Physical Organic Chemistry ; Vol. 27, issue. 2 , 2014 , pp. 163-167 ; ISSN: 08943230 Vafaeezadeh, M ; Fattahi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Silica gel-confined ionic liquid (IL) is a class of heterogeneous catalysts with broad catalytic applications. Leaching of the IL from the surface of the support is the major drawback of these catalysts, which reduce the catalyst efficiency during the chemical reactions. To investigate the effect of the hydrogen bonding on the leaching phenomena, the interaction between the 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium-based IL with various anions (Cl-, Br-, HSO4 -, NO3 -, BF 4 -, and PF6 -) and the surface of the silica gel were studied using density functional theory. Hence, a hydroxylated cage-like cluster of silica gel, Si4O6(OH), was selected to mimic the surface. The values of ÎEinteraction show that...

    Abstract
Gold nanorods (GNRs) can be used in various biomedical applications; however, very little is known about their in vivo tissue distribution by radiolabeling. Here, we have developed a rapid and simple method with high yield and without disturbing their optical properties for radiolabeling of gold rods with iodine-131 in order to track in vivo tissue uptake of GNRs after systemic administration by biodistribution analysis and γ-imaging. Following intravenous injection into rat, PEGylated GNRs have much longer blood circulation times. We have developed a rapid and simple method for radiolabeling of gold rods with iodine-131 in order to track in vivo tissue uptake of gold nanorods after systemic...

Gold extraction from an oxide ore in iodine-iodide solutions

    , Article Industrial Electrochemistry and Electrochemical Engineering General Session - 220th ECS Meeting, Boston, MA, 9 October 2011 through 14 October 2011 ; Volume 41, Issue 17 , 2012 , Pages 53-60 ; 19385862 (ISSN) ; 9781607683070 (ISBN) Baghalha, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Two types of gold ores were subjected to iodide/iodine leaching at room temperature. The effects of three factors, including ore type (a carbonaceous and an oxide gold ores), iodide/iodine concentration, and the presence of oxygen in solution on gold leaching performance were investigated. The carbonaceous ore showed only 20% gold extraction into the solution; since gold-iodide complexes would readily adsorb on organic matter. In contrast, gold extraction from the oxide ore in a solution containing 20 g/L iodide and 4 g/L iodine reached 77% in 6 h and 89% in 24 h. With iodate as the oxidant, no gold could be leached in 48 hours. When the iodate was partially converted to iodine by adding HCl...

Modeling of platinum extraction from used reforming catalyst in iodine solutions

    , Article ECS Transactions ; Volume 41, Issue 17 , 2012 , Pages 45-51 ; 19385862 (ISSN) ; 9781607683070 (ISBN) Moghaddam, H. R ; Baghallha, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Platinum extraction from spent reforming catalysts in iodine solutions under atmospheric pressure and at temperatures up to 95°C was previously investigated in our group. In this system, platinum is oxidized from the spent catalyst with tri-iodide. In some of the experiments, it was observed that platinum extraction peaked and then decreased. This indicates that a precipitation reaction slowly occurs that removes the dissolved Pt ions from the solution. Power-law rate equation for the Pt extraction to PtI6 2- and the precipitation of the dissolved platinum to PtI 4(s) was implemented to model the experimental Pt extraction data. The activation energies for the platinum dissolution reaction...

    , Article Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research ; Volume 51, Issue 47 , 2012 , Pages 15315-15323 ; 08885885 (ISSN) Outokesh, M ; Saket, A ; Ahmadi, S. J ; Hosseinpour, M ; Khanchi, A. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
The current study is aimed at comparison of adsorption behaviors of silica-supported Cu nanoparticles (Si-N-Cu) and micrometric copper powder (Mi-Cu) for uptake of iodine vapor. The Si-N-Cu was synthesized by the decomposition of aqueous Cu(NO3)2 solution at supercritical condition, followed by reduction of the sample by H 2-N2 mixture. The Si-N-Cu sample with 29.4 nm Cu particles adsorbed 95% of I2 at partial pressure 10-5 bar in 1 h, while the 1 μm Mi-Cu adsorbed 51% of iodine in 6 h, indicating higher yield and faster kinetics of the nanometric sample. Theoretical analysis revealed the existence of a strong thermodynamic size effect in the Cu-I2 reaction system, so that molar |ΔG| for 2...

    Abstract
Various methods, such as those developed by the Medical Internal Radiation Dosimetry (MIRD) Committee of the Society of Nuclear Medicine or employing dose point kernels, have been applied to the radiation dosimetry of 131I radionuclide therapy. However, studies have not shown a strong relationship between tumour absorbed dose and its overall therapeutic response, probably due in part to inaccuracies in activity and dose estimation. In the current study, the GATE Monte Carlo computer code was used to facilitate voxel-level radiation dosimetry for organ activities measured in an . 131I-treated thyroid cancer patient. This approach allows incorporation of the size, shape and composition of...

    Abstract
Vertical copper oxide nanoflakes were synthesized on a Cu foil through oxidation in alkaline conditions. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that after exposing the nanoflakes to an Escherichia coli bacterial suspension, the outermost surface of the nanoflakes was chemically reduced through the glycolysis process of the bacteria. Current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of the nanoflakes (measured perpendicular to surface of the Cu foil by using conductive atomic force microscopy) indicated that electrical resistivity of the nanoflakes increased about one order of magnitude after exposure to the bacterial suspension. The nanoflakes reduced by the bacterial suspension could also be...

Characterization and transesterification of Iranian bitter almond oil for biodiesel production

    , Article Applied Energy ; Volume 88, Issue 7 , 2011 , Pages 2377-2381 ; 03062619 (ISSN) Atapour, M ; Kariminia, H. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
In the present work the production of biodiesel using bitter almond oil (BAO) in a potassium hydroxide catalyzed transesterification reaction was investigated. The BAO was obtained from resources available in Iran and its physical and chemical properties including iodine value, acid value, density, kinematic viscosity, fatty acid composition and mean molecular weight were specified. The low acid value of BAO (0.24. mg. KOH/g) indicated that the pretreatment of raw oil with acid was not required. The fatty acid content analysis confirmed that the contribution of unsaturated fatty acids in the BAO is high (84.7. wt.%). Effect of different parameters including methanol to oil molar ratio (3-11....
