Using ARB Process for Metal Matrix Foam and Composite Production

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khalkhali, Mohammad (Author) ; Akbarzadeh, Abbas (Supervisor)
Metal matrix composites (MMC) and metal foams (MF) have been the topic of numerous researches during the last decades. The appropriate mechanical and physical properties of these materials make them useful in various industries. In this research, a unique approach is introduced for producing MMCs and MFs in which accumulative roll bonding (ARB) is employed in order to achieve a homogeneous distribution of ceramic particles in the metal matrix. Also, foamed structures can be made by subjecting Al/TiH2 composite to an appropriate annealing heat treatment where TiH2 particles decompose to hydrogen and titanium. In this work, the effect of number of ARB cycles on the size and distribution of...

Fabrication and Characterization of Methanol and Hydrogen Sensors Based on Porous Silicon

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Razi Astaraie, Fatemeh (Author) ; Iraji Zad, Azam (Supervisor)
We studied porous silicon as a resistive gas sensor at room temperature. Meso- and macro- porous silicon were formed by electrochemical etching of single crystal silicon wafers in different conditions. For Meso porous Si we used p+-type wafers as substrate and for macro porous Si formation n- and p-type wafers were used. The mechanism of methanol vapor sensing was studied by Scanning tunneling spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results showed that methanol increases partial oxidation of surface and causes increase of defect density. These defects play important role to trap electrons and create “acceptor surface states”. These acceptor surface states in p+-type...

For comparison, an alloy without Siby the same method was also produced. The effects of trace Si addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties in magnesium alloy with composition of...

Through Silicon Via (TSV) to Transistor Noise Coupling Characterization

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Amiri, Sajjad (Author) ; Sarvari, Reza (Supervisor)
Due to the physical limitations of the conventional 2D ICs at Giga-Scale Integration, modern technologies have been emerged. Among them, through silicon via (TSV) - based 3D ICs have been used to continue Moore’s law in the interconnect era. In these systems, dies are stacked at z-direction after wafer thinning. Electrical connections between stacked dies are done by TSVs. One important advantage of 3D integration technology is their ability to stack heterogeneous systems with different technologies on a single chip. This will not only increase interconnect density but also will reduce the delay and power consumption. However, nowadays, fabrication and optimum design of TSVs are still big...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Asnavandi, Majid (Author) ; Ghorbani, Mohammad (Supervisor)
Composite coatings including self-lubricant particles such as graphite, MoS2, Al2O3 and SiC are extensively used to decrease the coefficient of friction of tribo-surfaces. Adding lubricant particles to an appropriate metallic matrix like copper, nickel, lead and their alloys is a suitable option in severe condition –for instance high temperature and low pressure- which liquid lubricants will be failed. Bronze can give various properties such as wear resistance, corrosion and oxidation protection, However cyanide solutions for electroplating process have environmentally limited for plating of Cu-Sn. In this research, a chloride electrolyte for bronze electroplating was developed and effect of...

A Power-efficient Architecture for SRAM-based FPGAs Using Reconfigurable Hard Logic Design in Dark Silicon Era

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ebrahimi, Zahra (Author) ; Asadi, Hossein (Supervisor)
Significant increase of static power with downscaling of transistor feature size and threshold voltage has lead to the end of Dennard scaling. This obstacle has put a Power Wall to further integration of CMOS technology in Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). An efficient solution to cope with this obstacle is to apply power gating to the inactive fractions of a single die, referred to as Dark Silicon. Previous studies employing power gating on SRAM-based FPGAs have primarily focused on using large-input Look-up Tables (LUTs) which suffer from poor logic utilization, and subsequently, limiting the benefits of power gating techniques. This thesis proposes a heterogeneous Power-Efficient...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Najafi Ivaki, Moein (Author) ; Vesaghi, Mohammad Ali (Supervisor)
The silicon vacancy in silicon carbide is a strong emergent candidate for applications in quantum information processing. 4H, 6H and 3C polytypes of SiC all host coherent and optically addressable defect spin states. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) investigations suggest that silicon vacancy point defects in SiC possess properties similar to those of the NV center in diamond. We provide a new theoretical frame to explain a wider range of experimental results. Employing a proposed generalized Hubbard model, with the help of electronic structure programs, DFT, second quantization, and various computational approaches, we obtain new...

To achieve these goals in a power network, a comprehensive asset management plan with a sound policy for inspection, periodic maintenance, replacement, and disposal of depreciated equipment is required. One of the high-risk sectors of the electricity grid is the insulation section of distribution and transmission lines. In recent years, composite insulators have been used more widely because of their desirable characteristics such as: hydrophobicity, lower price, and lower weight if compared with the another...

Investigation of Thermal Stress Effect on The Performance of Thin Film Solar Cells Using Finite Element Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Namvar, Arman (Author) ; Naghdabadi, Reza (Supervisor) ; Sohrabpour, Saeed (Supervisor)
Thin film solar cells have low efficiency compared to crystalline silicon solar cells; however, they are low-cost and flexible. In manufacturing these solar cells, thin films are deposited at high temperatures (higher than 200℃) on a thick metal, plastic, or glass substrate using sputtering and plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) methods. Since the thin films and substrate have different thermal expansion coefficients, cooling the system from deposition temperature to room temperature induces thermal residual stresses in both the films and substrate. In addition, these stresses, especially those induced in the amorphous silicon layer can change the carrier mobility and band gap...

Processor Allocation for Future Multi-Core Chip-Multiprocessor

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Agha Ali Akbari, Fatemeh (Author) ; Sarbazi Azad, Hamid (Supervisor)
Since 2005, processor designers have increased core counts to exploit Moore’s Law scaling, rather than focusing on single-core performance. For decades, this approach provides desired performance for parallel and multithreaded workloads. On the other hand, rising of utilization wall limits the number of transistors that can be powered on in chip and result in a large region to be dark. So, same as before trend for performance scaling in future multi processor, an appropriate architecture is essential. There are some structures for this era which used specialization approach to cope with the limited power budget. Therefore, in this thesis, we propose a general-purpose platform that provides...
