, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jafarian, Mohammad (Author) ; Ranjbar, Ali Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the most important problems in using wind energy is the estimation of wind energy potential of a region with acceptable accuracy. To use wind energy and convert it to electrical energy it is necessary to study the economical aspects of wind farm installation, and to choose an appropriate wind turbine to be installed in a region. To do such a study and to choose approperiate wind turbine, annual energy output of different wind turbines should be estimated in that region. The porpuse of this thesis is to develop new methods to estimate annual energy production of a wind turbine by using some of the parameters of wind speed pattern of a region such as wind speed average, wind speed...

Design of Three-Phase to Single-phase Converter Suitable for Small Range Wind Turbine with PMSG

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shamsnia, Ali (Author) ; Mokhtari, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this research a special Three-Phase to Single-Phase converter has been proposed to connect a three-phase Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) of a wind turbine to a single-phase network. Common back-to-back converter used for this application employs a bulk capacitor in its DC link to generate the pulsating component of the single-phase side instantaneous power. This capacitor is costly and reduces system overall reliability. This problem is alleviated in this work by providing the single-phase load pulsating power using the PMSG large inductances. The proposed system leaves the PMSG torque ripple-free while providing the single-phase load power. With the help of this method,...

Control of a Distributed Generation System Comprising Wind Turbine, Photovoltaic Array, and Fuel Cell in Standalone
    Operation

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shirazi, Moein (Author) ; Zolghadri, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor) ; Karimi, Houshang (Supervisor)
    Abstract
On account of the exhausting nature and increasing daily cost of the fossil fuels, it seems that replacing the fossil fuels by an alternative source of energy is inevitable. Moreover, in the remote areas that the electricity network is not accessible, the use of distributed sources (DSs) such as solar energy and wind energy is advantageous. Continuity of the supply and voltage control of the load in spite of the stochastic nature of the generated power of the renewable energy resources are the main concerns in the distributed generation (DG) systems. In this thesis, stand-alone operation of a DG unit comprising a solar unit and wind turbine as primary sources of energy is considered. A...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Asadi Khoshouei, Ebrahim (Author) ; Parniani, Mostafa (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Permanent-magnet synchronous generators have attracted more attention in recent years due to their special advantages which make them a suitable option for variable-speed wind turbines.Low-voltage ride through capability is one of the main concerns in widespread use of wind turbines in electric grids. Nowadays wind turbines are expected to remain connected to the grid during voltage dips and support the voltage recovery process by supplying reactive power. This thesis aims at behavior analysis and performance improvement of permanent-magnet synchronous generator-based wind turbines during grid faults. A simple method is presented to overcome the over current problem of the grid-side converter...

Unstaedy Boundary Layer Measurement over an Airfoil in Plunging Motion

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Abdollahi, Rezvan (Author) ; Soltani, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
An experimental investigation of unsteady boundary layer over a wind turbine blade conducted in a subsonic wind tunnel. The experiment performed at different positions along the airfoil chord. Model was oscillated with amplitude of ±5 cm. Reynolds number, based on airfoil chord, ranged 3˟105 upto 6.5˟105 and the reduced frequency ranged from 0.0055 to 0.0981. Velocity profile measured with a total pressure rake. The data were reduced via a low-pass filter. Increasing the reduced frequency, the velocity profile increases the level on turbulence fluctuation and becomes more attached to the surface.

    Abstract
Inappropriate effects of fossil fuels and conventional power generation systems on the environment have necessitated a sustainable energy system for the next decade by growing interests in renewable energy systems. The world’s most fast-growing renewable energy resource is the wind energy. The main problem of wind power is the power fluctuations at the load side caused by the variable nature of wind speed, and the main issue in case of remote locations is the long-term storage of power generated by wind turbines. Batteries can be used to store a limited amount of energy for a short time. Although new advances in this field have been achieved, most common type of batteries is hardly able to...

Cost Effective and Optimum Strategy for Gride Connected Small Wind Turbine

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hajbabaei, Amirhosein (Author) ; Oraei, Hashem (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Regarding the range of power in small wind turbine ,the manufacturing cost is very important to produce it feasible . so cost factors should be considered in control strategy. small wind turbine operate at lower wind speed because they are located where the energy is needed rather than where the wind is high for example in residential or rural area in lower height. In these condition wind speed are changing more because of lower height .so the maximum power point tracking algorithm should have a fast dynamic. In order to have lower number of device there are no sensor for wind or generator’s speed .only the voltage and current of different part of the system is measured.
    here the aim...

    Abstract
Without optimization, it is impossible to reduce the cost of power generation from an efficient megawatt wind turbine. In this work, we present a multi-objective algorithm to optimize the megawatt blade geometry. In this algorithm, the mass of blade and the wind turbine annual energy production (AEP) are considered as the objective functions. The design variables are blade chord, blade twist, airfoil thickness, spar geometry and blade curvature distribution. The constraints are maximum allowable strain for the chosen materials, maximum tip deflection and maximum tip speed. For the internal geometry, we consider two spars and four panels. The blade element momentum method (BEM) is used for...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rezazadeh Sotudeh, Ghasem (Author) ; Tahami, Farzad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The global wind energy capacity has been increased rapidly in the past few years and became the fastest developing renewable energy technology. Small Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generators (PMSG’s) are widely used in low power wind turbines because they don’t need a gearbox and complicated control systems. In order to inject the electrical power generated by PMSG to the grid, an AC-DC-AC power electronic converter is required. A novel low cost efficient AC-DC converter is proposed to obtain the maximum power per ampere of PMSG. The new structure for the rectifier stage of the AC/AC converter is based on a DCM operated SEPIC converter and can convert the variable voltage and frequency of...

Proposal of a Modular Structure and a Load Sharing Strategy among Back to Back Converters for Wind Turbines

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Amouzegar Ashtiani, Nima (Author) ; Mokhtari, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The utilization of wind power has been increasing in recent years which lead to enhance the the usage of wind power capacity in the range of MegaWatt. However, due to the limitation ofswitching devices capacity, which exists in power electronic converters, improving the capacity of wind power generation is not accessible. Thus, a feasible solution for this problem is paralleling power electronics converters, which increases both the capacity of power generation and the reliability of wind turbine systems. Nevertheless, paralleling converters may cause a circulating-current which brings current discrepancy, current waveform distortion, power losses, increase in THD of currents, and reduction...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Radmanesh, Amirreza (Author) ; Abbaspour, Madjid (Supervisor) ; Soltani, Mohamad Reza (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
The ultimate aim of this research is optimizing high- performance Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT) associated with using Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to predict the flow behavior over wind turbine blades. Computational prediction of the flow over wind turbines is a challenging numerical problem because of the complicated aerodynamics and large variation in length scales. Phenomena such as; the unsteady flow, vortex shedding of the blade tips, flow separation, complicated blade geometry due to variable twist and chord and changes in angle of attack, and highly turbulent flow over blade sections makes CFD prediction challenging, as well as interesting. The goal is to gain an in depth...

    Abstract
Today, renewable energies such as solar and wind power are replaced to fossil fuel. Wind turbines are two categories; horizontal axis and vertical axis. Vertical axis turbines are not dependent on wind direction and since equipments are installed at the bottom of these turbine towers, maintenance is easy. Among vertical axis turbines, performance of darrieus turbine is better. The aim of this thesis is, analysis and preliminary designing of 1-kilowatt darrieus wind turbine, based on climate of the country, for using in urban environments or areas where there is no economic justification for development of power grid systems. In this regard, statistical data base is made up of vertical axis...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Siahkali, Hassan (Author) ; Vakilian, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In power system operation, the term "operation planning" carries a wide range of meaning. For some utilities, operation planning denotes primarily short-term planning tasks (up to several days), such as load forecasting, unit commitment, hydro-thermal coordination, transaction pricing, fuel allocation, and security analysis while for other companies operational planning is interpreted in a wider context, and include mid-term planning activities (up to several months), such as maintenance planning, fuel budgeting, rate forecasting, network planning, relay coordination, etc. The mid-term planning provides the link between the long-term and short-term planning programs. The duration of this...
