Evaluation of Functional and Structural Networks of Healthy Macaque Monkey Brains and Comparison with Macaque Monkeys with Parkinson’s in Previous Research

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Yousef Abadi, Matin (Author) ; Rabiee, Hamid Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The brain is one of the most critical parts of the body with a lot of complexity. The treatment of brain diseases has always been in an aura of uncertainty due to its high sensitivity. In the meantime, Parkinson's disease has become the second most frequent brain disease after Alzheimer's, involving more than two percent of the population over 65 years of age. One of the biggest questions in this field is how the Parkinson's process is formed. This question has already received much attention from the pathophysiological point of view but has not been answered from the functional and structural brain network's point of view. This research compares healthy macaque monkeys' functional and...

Well-posedness of Two Mathematical Models for Alzheimer's Disease

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Yarmohammadi, Parisa (Author) ; Hesaaraki, Mahmoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In season 1, we introduce a mathematical model of the in vivo progression of Alzheimer’s disease with focus on the role of prions in memory impairment. Our model consists of differential equations that describe the dynamic formation of Aβ -amyloid plaques based on the concentrations of Aβ oligomers, PrPC proteins, and the Aβ-×-PrPC complex, which are hypothesized to be responsible for synaptic tox- icity. We prove the well posedness of the model and provided stability results for its unique equilibrium, when the polymerization rate of β-amyloid is constant and also when it is described by a power law. In seson 2, We consider the existence and uniqueness of solutions of an initial-boundary...

Analysis of a Mathematical Model Describing the Geographical Spread of Dengue Disease

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Gazori, Fereshteh (Author) ; Hesaaraki, Mahmoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Dengue is one of the most important infectious diseases in the world. This disease is a viral infection that is transmitted to humans through the bite of a mosquito called Aedes aegypti. For this reason, geographical regions infected with this type of mosquito are at risk of Dengue outbreak. In this thesis, we first present a mathematical model describing the geographical spread of Dengue disease, which includes the movement of both the human population and the winged mosquito population. This model is derived from a mixed system of partial and ordinary differential equations. Our proposed model has the ability to consider the possibility of asymptomatic infection, so that the presence of...

Urine Analysis by a Microfluidic Paper-Based Device for Renal Function Test

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Pourghanbari Marvast, Mohadeseh (Author) ; Saadatmand, Maryam (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Chronic kidney disease is one of the silent diseases that progresses slowly, often without symptoms, and can eventually lead to kidney loss. Early detection of this disease can help diagnose it and prevent further problems. Urinary creatinine is an effective biomarker for early diagnosis of chronic kidney disease, but methods available in clinics are problematic for people living in disadvantaged areas because of the high cost and the need for 24-hour urine collection. Currently, paper-based microfluidic devices are being developed because they are easy to manufacture, inexpensive, the fluid is permeable by capillary force, and no additional equipment is needed. In this work, to fabricate a...

Development of a Human Activity Recognition System with an Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Post-Processing for the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment-BIG and Functional Activities

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Partovi, Ehsan (Author) ; Behzadipour, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Human Activity Recognition (HAR) has had tremendous improvements in the field of elderly monitoring and telerehabilitation. An anchor point for HAR systems in telerehabilitation is supervising rehabilitative excercises. For Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients, a group of rehabilitative activities, known as Lee Silverman Voice Treatment-BIG, or LSVT-BIG, have shown to be effective in improving motor performance. Similar to any rehabilitative measure, delivering these activities requires the supervision of an expert or clinician, so that the patient receives proper feedbacks. HAR systems can replace human experts. They can recognize activities and provide the user with proper feedback. HAR...

A Mathematical Model to Organize Transplants in a Kidney Exchange Program with Uncertain Failures

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Porbar, Gohar (Author) ; Najafi, Mehdi (Supervisor) ; Shadrokh, Shahram (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Kidney transplants are vital for patients with end-stage kidney disease. Therefore, it is essential to allocate kidneys to patients efficiently. Kidney Exchange Programs allow patients with incompatible donors to exchange donors and receive a suitable kidney. In practice, these exchanges occur within cyclic or chain-like structures. Planned transplants may be canceled before the transplant takes place, for a variety of reasons. Failure of one transplant in a cycle or chain can result in the failure of all transplants in that cycle or chain, which can lead to drastic inefficiency in the exchange program. In this thesis, we study kidney exchange programs under uncertainty. We consider...

Modeling the Relationship between Central Aortic Pressure and Radial Photoplethysmogram in Flow-mediated Dilation Test

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Parsafar, Mohammad Habib (Author) ; Vosughi Vahdat, Bijan (Supervisor) ; Zahedi, Edmond (Supervisor)
    Abstract
According to the World Health Organization, about 35% of deaths worldwide are due to cardiovascular diseases, therefore the evaluation of vascular endothelial function has great prognostic and diagnostic value for cardiovascular diseases. The conventional noninvasive method for endothelial function evaluation is the measurement of flow-mediated dilation in brachial artery using ultrasound imaging (FMD-US). As the accuracy of FMD-US depends on the operator's skill and the resolution of the ultrasound images, this method has not been adopted. In this work, we propose to use a low cost, easily-accessible surrogate signal, the photoplethysmogram (PPG) to implement the FMD test. Whereas previous...

We have evaluated our model performance in semi-supervised and transfer learning approaches. Our experiments show that using this approach can improve model accuracy and PRC up to 20 percent on semi-supervised setting. The results also show that pretraining can improve classification PRC up to 20 percent on transfer learning task on HAM10000...

An Analysis of a Mathematical Model Describing the Geographic Spread of Dengue Disease

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hashemifar, Alireza (Author) ; Hesaraki, Mahmoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
We consider a system of nonlinear partial differential equations corresponding to a generalization of a mathematical model for geographical spreading of dengue disease. the mosquito population is divided into subpopulations: winged form (mature female mosquitoes) and aquatic form (comprising eggs, larvae and pupae); the human population is divided into the subpopulations:susceptible, infected and removed (or immune). On the other hand we allow higher spatial dimensions and also parameters depending on space and time. is last generalization is done to cope with possible abiotic effects as variations in temperature, humidity, wind velocity, carrier capacities, and so on; thus, the results...

Application Microarray Technology in Infectious Diseases

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nazari Nodooshan, Khadijeh (Author) ; Mahdavi-Amiri, Nezameddin (Supervisor) ; Karami, Ali (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
DNA microarrays consist of DNA microscopic points that are attached to a solid surface such as glass, plastic or silicon chip and formed as an array. The fixed pieces of DNA are considered as searchers. In an experiment, we can use thousands of searchers. Therefore, any microarray consists of the same number of genetic tests as the experiment performed on all of them in parallel. Whit this ability, arrays have speeded up the biological investigations. Microarray technology can be seen as a continued development of southern blotting. However, the most important stage in this technology, analysis of data, requires reliable bioinformatics tools achieving high reliabilities. Infectious diseases,...

The purpose of this study is to assess the inhibitory effects of an appropriate nanoparticles loaded with gallic acid on the fibrillation of alpha-synuclein. Alpha-synuclein is a major component of protein plaques in synucleinopathies, particularly Parkinson’s disease. Gallic acid (GA, 3,4,5-trihydroxy benzoic acid) is a well–known small molecule which can inhibit the formation of α-synuclein fibrils. For the process of fibrillation, purified protein was incubated at 37◦C and pH 7.2. Fibrillation was analyzed by the standard fibril methods.after that investigated fabricating of gallic acid trapped in the chitosan nanoparticles and gallic acid loaded in chitosan –coated mesoporous silica...

Modeling the Kidney Market in Iran

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Naderi Tabar, Mohammad (Author) ; Fatemi Ardestani, Farshad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The purpose of this study is to model people's behavior on both sides of the kidney market. The healthy person decides to donate a live kidney (for a certain amount) on the supply side. On the demand side, the patient chooses between the two existing kidney queues, the living kidney and the cadaveric kidney, based on the individual's income and belief from the waiting time in each of the two queues. The sick person faces two critical risks in life: risk of death and kidney failure. To model these two risks, it is assumed that each person has a level of health that consists of two deterministic and stochastic parts. In this way, with a deterministic rate, a person's health level will decrease...

    Abstract
This paper studies and compares the effect of "Dutch disease" in Iranian economy in two periods of rising oil price (1973-1978) and (2004-2010). The study presents a DSGE model to analysis the behavior of economic variable in both periods and to address this question that whether or not policy maker has learning behavior. The model consists of households, final goods producers who divided in tradable goods and non-tradable goods sector and the government. I use calibration methods to estimate models parameters.Comparison of simulated results and the actual macroeconomic variables in Iran during 1338-1390 indicates that, first of all Dutch disease effect occur in both periods of oil shock so...

Modeling of Different Geometries of Children's Heart Occluder's by Finite Element Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mousavizadeh, Mohammad Hossein (Author) ; Arghavani, Jamal (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Congenital heart defects are a type of heart diseases that some babies get at birth. These diseases generally have symptoms such as shortness of breath, headache, impaired blood supply, hyperplasia of the lungs, enlarged heart, and so on. In the past, open heart surgery was commonly used to treat such diseases, which was a costly and risky procedure. But over time, occluders made it easier. An occluder is referd to a device that is generally minimally invasive in the area of the fault and could block it. The occluders are usually braided type, with inside polyethylene fibers, where tissues can grow and clogs the defect over time. Although occluders have greatly increased the success rate of...
