Impact of Subsidies on Evolution of Fertility and Human Capital in the Iranian Economy

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Farrokhi, Farid (Author) ; Nili, Farhad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
On the contrary to common explanations of fertility transition in the Iraninan Economy there has been a growing human capital without decline of fertility for some decades followed by a rapid fall in fertility without a higher growth of human capital during the next decades. Accounting for these facts we propose a new link between subsidies financed by exogenous oil revenue and the evolution of fertility and human capital. While the educational subsidy accelerates the growth of human capital, the presence of financial subsidies keeps fertility from declining. Then, fertility declines with sizeable delay but sharply because (i) high fertility in first generations implies a growth rate of...

Money, Economic Order & The Problem of Moral Responsibility

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shahrabi Farahani, Sajjad (Author) ; Taqhavi, Mostafa (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the history of philosophy, the discussion of moral responsibility is tied to "Free Will" metaphysical controversies. Philosophers generally expect that people have "alternative possibilities" -that require them not to be bound to a deterministic situation- or if they don't have such possibilities, at least be able to "control" their actions, and if they don't know all aspects of what they do, at least not to be in ignorance about that, according to Aristotle. In the case of having such minimal possibilities, it is that one can be considered morally responsible for his or her actions. This broad conception of moral responsibility can be traced from Aristotle's discussions in the...

A Survey on kant's Universal Law: Parfit, Scanlon

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mirzaei Ghazi, Shervin (Author) ; Azadegan, Ebrahim (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In his book “Groundwork for the Metaphysic of Morals ”, Kant tries to pesent a formula for the supreme pinciple of morality. He ends up introducing three formulae that he thinks are all the same and just pesenting one formula In three different ways. After publishing this book, many criticisms were levelled against both his way of argument and the efficacy of his proposed formulae. In this enquiry, by focusing on the first two chapters of Kant’s book, and by considering the universal law formula and the humanity formula, we try to answer these criticisms. In the way, we make use of the new reading of Kant’s view- the critical reading- proposed by Samuel Kerstein, according to which Kant’s...

On the Possibility and Realization of a Science-Technology System Based on Religion

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Taqavi, Mostafa (Author) ; Golshani, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The worldview and value system can use a cognitive-normative framework to select and shape science and technology. Of course, this framework is not the sole factor in shaping and selecting science and technology. The context in which science and technology flourish is also an important factor. Thus a religious science and technology is possible. Furthermore one can find many examples in the contemporary science and technology which are rooted in a secular and naturalistic outlook., but one can shape a science and technology which are rooted in religious worldview and value system. These examples show that one can generate a religious type of science and technology ,but in order to do this...

Prediction of HLA-Peptide Binding using 3D Structural Features

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Bagh Golshani, Marjan (Author) ; Sharifi Zarchi, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The human leukocyte antigen protein, commonly known as HLA, has the ability to present small protein fragments called peptides on the surface of cells, whether they originate from within the cell or externally. The binding of these peptides to HLA receptors is a crucial step that triggers an immune response. By estimating the affinity between peptides and HLA class I, we can identify novel antigens that have the potential to be targeted by cancer therapeutic vaccines. Computational methods that predict the binding affinity between peptides and HLA receptors have the potential to expedite the design process of cancer vaccines. Currently, most computational methods exclusively rely on...

Personalized Dialogue Generation using Transfer Learning

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Karimkhani, Fatemeh (Author) ; Beigy, Hamid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In recent years, dialogue generation systems as a branch of natural language text generation have made significant progress. These systems enable human-machine conversations and based on their application, they’re divided into two categories: the goal-oriented, and the open-domain dialogue systems. A goal-oriented dialogue is based on a specific goal, such as the hotel reservation or the product recommendation, while there is no specific topic or goal in the open-domain conversations. This wide coverage of topics in open-domain systems causes some occasional contradictions between utterances. Therefore, preserving dialogue consistency has become a challenge in open-domain dialogue systems....
