    , Article 4th European Congress of the International Association of Hydroenvironment engineering and Research, 27 July 2016 through 29 July 2016 ; 2016 , Pages 665-670 ; 9781138029774 (ISBN) Kabiri Samani, A ; Parvaneh, A ; Nekooie, M. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    CRC Press/Balkema
    Abstract
Labyrinth side weir is one type of weirs, which can be used when the length of opening is limited. One of the advantages of labyrinth side weir is to increase the effective length of weir perpendicular to the flow and, therefore, diverting more discharge with the same flow depth and weir geometry (opening and height). Discharge coefficient should be determined to investigate the weir performance and estimate the discharge passing over the weir. In this paper, hydraulic performance of labyrinth side weir with asymmetric geometry has been experimentally studied. The change to the geometry of ordinary labyrinth side weirs causes an increase in the effectiveness of the length of weir as being...

    Abstract
This research focuses on a sensitivity analysis of accumulators configuration in a Large Break Loss of Coolant Accident (LB-LOCA) in Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP). In this way, primary and secondary side components are modeled using RELAP5/MOD3.3 code. Having modeled the BNPP in a steady state hot full power operation, the thermal hydraulic consequences of a LB-LOCA in the reactor inlet is considered and sensitivity analysis for four major different configurations of accumulators are studied in detail. It is shown that any arrangement of accumulators in the Reactor Pressure Chamber (RPC) or Reactor Collection Chambers (RCC) leads to variation of fuel and clad temperatures during the...

Forecasting models for flow and total dissolved solids in Karoun river-Iran

    , Article Journal of Hydrology ; Volume 535 , 2016 , Pages 148-159 ; 00221694 (ISSN) Salmani, M. H ; Salmani Jajaei, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Water quality is one of the most important factors contributing to a healthy life. From the water quality management point of view, TDS (total dissolved solids) is the most important factor and many water developing plans have been implemented in recognition of this factor. However, these plans have not been perfect and very successful in overcoming the poor water quality problem, so there are a good volume of related studies in the literature. We study TDS and the water flow of the Karoun river in southwest Iran. We collected the necessary time series data from the Harmaleh station located in the river. We present two Univariate Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Movement Average (ARIMA)...

    , Article 2009 ASME Power Conference, 21 July 2009 through 23 July 2009 ; 2009 , Pages 153-157 ; 9780791843505 (ISBN) Sajadi, B ; Sayyadi, P ; Saidi, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Increasing concerns about global warming and environmental pollution control has pushed the relevant organizations to set regulations and to develop programs for energy saving. In addition, for many high energy using appliances, energy labeling provides the end user with important data to select energy-efficient equipments and encourage the manufacturers to enhance the performance of their productions. In this research, a new energy-saving program for wet cooling towers has been developed. Considering a thermo-hydraulic analysis, a novel Energy Index (IE) has been extracted which takes all aspects of the problem into account. The present index can be used as a proper criterion for energy...

    , Article Journal of Hydrology ; Volume 535 , 2016 , Pages 235-255 ; 00221694 (ISSN) Ketabchi, H ; Mahmoodzadeh, D ; Ataie Ashtiani, B ; Simmons, C. T ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Sea-level rise (SLR) influences groundwater hydraulics and in particular seawater intrusion (SWI) in many coastal aquifers. The quantification of the combined and relative impacts of influential factors on SWI has not previously been considered in coastal aquifers. In the present study, a systematic review of the available literature on this topic is first provided. Then, the potential remaining challenges are scrutinized. Open questions on the effects of more realistic complexities such as gradual SLR, parameter uncertainties, and the associated influences in decision-making models are issues requiring further investigation. We assess and quantify the seawater toe location under the impacts...

The purpose of solving the underground problems is to procure height of water as a function of coordinate and time. In observation of practical industries, we can use the...

Structural modification through pressurized sub-Tg annealing of metallic glasses

    , Article Journal of Applied Physics ; Volume 122, Issue 21 , 2017 ; 00218979 (ISSN) Foroughi, A ; Ashuri, H ; Tavakoli, R ; Stoica, M ; Ažopu, D ; Eckert, J ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The atomic structure of metallic glasses (MGs) plays an important role in their physical and mechanical properties. Numerous molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been performed to reveal the structure of MGs at the atomic scale. However, the cooling rates utilized in most of the MD simulations (usually on the order of 109-1012 K/s) are too high to allow the structure to relax into the actual structures. In this study, we performed long-term pressurized sub-Tg annealing for up to 1 μs using MD simulation to systematically study the structure evolution of Cu50Zr50 MG. We find that from relaxation to rejuvenation, structural excitation of MGs and transition during sub-Tg annealing depend on...

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy ; 2017 ; 19493029 (ISSN) Dorostkar Ghamsari, M. R ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Lehtonen, M ; Safdarian, A ; Hoshyarzadeh, A. S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, a stochastic framework including two hierarchical stages is presented for the operation of distribution systems with high penetrations of wind power. In the first stage, termed Day Ahead Market Stage (DAMS), power purchases from day-ahead (DA) market and commitment of distributed generations (DGs) are determined. The DAMS model is formulated as a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) optimization problem. The uncertainty in predictions of wind generation, real time prices, and load profile are included in the optimization problem according to a scenario-based stochastic programming approach. The risk encountered due to the uncertainties is also taken into account. The...

Unidirectional transport of water through an asymmetrically charged rotating carbon nanotube

    , Article Journal of Physical Chemistry C ; Volume 121, Issue 42 , 2017 , Pages 23649-23658 ; 19327447 (ISSN) Khodabakhshi, M ; Moosavi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Achieving a high speed, unidirectional water flow through carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is a key factor in designing novel nanofluidic devices. In this study, utilizing molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we propose a novel nanoscale water pump for directed water transportation using charged rotating CNTs. Two basic conditions for stable water flow, including thermodynamic nonequilibrium and spatial asymmetry, are provided by introducing partial charges on carbon atoms of the channel with asymmetric patterns and its rotation, respectively. We demonstrate that the performance of the water pump is proportional to the gradient of a linear charge distribution and angular velocity of the rotation. Our...

Analytical study of fluid flow modeling by diffusivity equation including the quadratic pressure gradient term

    , Article Computers and Geotechnics ; Volume 89 , 2017 , Pages 1-8 ; 0266352X (ISSN) Abbasi, M ; Izadmehr, M ; Karimi, M ; Sharifi, M ; Kazemi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Diffusivity equation which can provide us with the pressure distribution, is a Partial Differential Equation (PDE) describing fluid flow in porous media. The quadratic pressure gradient term in the diffusivity equation is nearly neglected in hydrology and petroleum engineering problems such as well test analysis. When a compressible liquid is injected into a well at high pressure gradient or when the reservoir possess a small permeability value, the effect of ignoring this term increases. In such cases, neglecting this parameter can result in high errors. Previous models basically focused on numerical and semi-analytical methods for semi-infinite domain. To the best of our knowledge, no...

    , Article Poromechanics 2017 - Proceedings of the 6th Biot Conference on Poromechanics, 9 July 2017 through 13 July 2017 ; 2017 , Pages 2027-2034 ; 9780784480779 (ISBN) Vahab, M ; Khoei, A. R ; Khalili, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, a coupled hydro-mechanical formulation is developed for the simulation of interaction between hydraulic fractures and natural discontinuities within saturated porous media. The momentum balance equation of the bulk together with the momentum balance and continuity equations of the fluid phase are employed to obtain the fully coupled set of governing equations. The hydro-fracture is modeled for fluid flow using the Darcy law. The natural discontinuity on the other hand is modeled for both opening and closing modes which induce fluid flow and/or contact behavior along the crack edges. The discontinuity in the displacement field is incorporated by using the Heaviside enrichment...

The ball is moved by two magnets installed outside of the evaporator. Moreover, a steady-state one-dimensional mathematical model of the...

Estimating the drainage rate from surface soil moisture drydowns: application of DfD model to in situ soil moisture data

    , Article Journal of Hydrology ; Volume 565 , 2018 , Pages 489-501 ; 00221694 (ISSN) Jalilvand, E ; Tajrishy, M ; Brocca, L ; Massari, C ; Ghazi Zadeh Hashemi, S ; Ciabatta, L ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The large heterogeneity in soil surface conditions makes it impracticable to obtain reliable estimates of soil hydraulic parameters for areas larger than few squared kilometers. However, identifying these parameters on a global scale is essential for many hydrological and climatic applications. In this study, a new approach named Drainage from Drydown (DfD) is proposed to estimate the coefficients of drainage using soil moisture observations. DfD firstly selects multiple drydown events when surface runoff and evapotranspiration rates are negligible compared to the drainage rate. Secondly, by inverting the soil water balance equation, the drainage coefficients are obtained. Synthetic...

Permeability mapping of gelatin methacryloyl hydrogels

    , Article Acta Biomaterialia ; Volume 77 , 2018 , Pages 38-47 ; 17427061 (ISSN) Miri, A. K ; Goodarzi Hosseinabadi, H ; Cecen, B ; Hassan, S ; Shrike Zhang, Y ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
We report the development of an efficient, customized spherical indentation-based testing method to systematically estimate the hydraulic permeability of gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) hydrogels fabricated in a wide range of mass concentrations and photocrosslinking conditions. Numerical simulations and Biot's theory of poroelasticity were implemented to calibrate our experimental data. We correlated elastic moduli and permeability coefficients with different GelMA concentrations and crosslinking densities. Our model could also predict drug release rates from the GelMA hydrogels and diffusion of biomolecules into the three-dimensional GelMA hydrogels. The results potentially provide a design...
