The role of ion partitioning in electrohydrodynamic characteristics of soft nanofluidics: Inclusion of EDL overlap and steric effects

    , Article Chemical Engineering Science ; Volume 190 , 2018 , Pages 443-458 ; 00092509 (ISSN) Reshadi, M ; Saidi, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2018
    Abstract
In this paper, we aim to account for the partitioning of finite sized ions and electric double layer (EDL) overlapping effects on the electrostatics and hydrodynamics of soft nanofluidics by stablishing a modified Poisson-Boltzmann (MPB) equation enjoying mean field approach. The application of the present MPB equation enables us to describe the interaction between the steric effect and electrostatic repulsion of EDL ions due to permittivity difference of polyelectrolyte layer (PEL) and electrolyte solution. Utilizing the Debye-Hückel approximation pertinent to low surface potentials, we analytically derive the solutions of electric potential and velocity profiles of mixed electroosmotic and...

    , Article International Journal of Refrigeration ; Volume 32, Issue 1 , 2009 , Pages 58-69 ; 01407007 (ISSN) Jafarian, A ; Saidi, M. H ; Kazemzadeh Hannani, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
The optimum design of a high capacity double inlet pulse tube refrigerator based on second law of thermodynamics has been presented in this paper. Second law is applied to calculate the work loss in the regenerator and to optimize the cryocooler performance. To investigate the behavior of the pulse tube refrigerator, mass and energy balance equations are applied to several control volumes of the cryocooler cycle. A complete system of conservation equations is employed to solve the regenerator analytically. The proposed model reports the cooling capacity of 110 W at 80 K cold end temperature at frequency of 50 Hz, orifice conductance of 0.4 and double inlet coefficient of 0.6, with 2.4 kW net...

, Article Shape Casting: 3rd International Symposium 2009 - Held During TMS 2009 Annual Meeting and Exhibition, San Francisco, CA, 15 February 2009 through 19 February 2009 ; 2009 , Pages 165-172 ; 9780873397346 (ISBN) Hadian, R ; Emamy, M ; Campbell, J ; Aluminum Committee of the Light Metals Division, LMD; Aluminum Committee of the Light Metals Division, LMD; Minerals, Metals , Materials Society, TMS ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
The effects of both Lithium modification and cooling rate on the microstructure and tensile properties of an in-situ prepared Al-15% Mg 2Si composite were investigated. Adding 0.3%Li reduced the average size of Mg2Si primary particles from ∼30 μm to ∼6 μm. The effect of cooling rate was investigated by the use of a mold with different section thickness from 3 to 9 mm. The results show a refinement of primary particle size as a result of both Li additions and increased cooling rate, and their effects were additive. Similarly, both effects increased UTS and elongation values. The refinement by Li and enhanced cooling rate is discussed in terms of an analogy with the effect of Sr and cooling...

    A Comprehensive Time-domain-based Optimization of a High-Frequency LLC-based Li-ion Battery Charger

    , Article 10th International Power Electronics, Drive Systems and Technologies Conference, PEDSTC 2019, 12 February 2019 through 14 February 2019 ; 2019 , Pages 415-420 ; 9781538692547 (ISBN) Karimi, S ; Tahami, F ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2019
    Abstract
The LLC resonant converter, as a promising solution for battery charger applications, has the ability to adjust its output voltage during Constant Current and Constant Voltage modes in the charging profile. However, its operation mode changes as switching frequency changes. Therefore, for efficiency-oriented optimizations in battery charger applications, the one-pointed efficiency is not an appropriate objective. To this end, in this paper, a multi-pointed averaged efficiency is considered for optimization along with the transformer volume. Another factor of a proper design for a wide output range LLC is the converter peak voltage gain that is calculated based on an accurate method. The...

    Abstract
Nowadays, the importance of the blood particles separation is undeniable in medical fields and there are different sorts of separation methods accordingly. Acoustic cell separation is chosen in this paper. Also, numerical methods have been used to study the effect of geometrical factors on the separation of the particles before spending time and expenses in a trial and error manner experimentally. We have implemented a plenary finite-element-based simulation of separatingblood particles such as white blood cells and platelets in an acoustic field using standing surface acoustic waves. In this paper, unlike previous works in which the channel is rectangular; the channel is trapezoidal in...

    Abstract
In this research, we investigate the effect of alkali metal cations including Li, Na and Cs in hydrothermal solution on the morphology, stability, and photoactivity of nanostructured TiO2 nanoflakes as a photoanode. The TiO2 nanoflakes are formed through hydrothermal treatment of Ti foil in 1.0 M LiOH, NaOH or CsOH at 100 °C for 3 h. By subsequent thermal reduction of the structure in an optimized Ar/H2 environment, conductive TiO2 nanoflakes were formed. The reduction treatment remarkably improves the photocurrent density of the TiO2 nanoflakes and has the highest impact on the sample treated in the NaOH alkali solution. For the nanoflakes produced in NaOH alkali solution, the bandgap is...

, Article Journal of Molecular Graphics and Modelling ; Volume 98 , April , 2020 Mosapour Kotena, Z ; Fattahi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Inc  2020
    Abstract
The derivatives of glucose such as glucosamine (β-D-GlcN) and N-acetyl-D-β-glucosamine (GlcNAc) are significant in several biological systems. D-GlcN has been used widely to treat osteoarthritis in humans and animal models as well as GlcNAc has been proposed as a treatment for autoimmune diseases. The DFT/B3LYP/6–311++G (d,p) method as well as QTAIM and NBO analyses were used to the acidity values of D-GlcN and GlcNAc sugars and their complexes with alkali ions in the gas phase. The Li+, Na+ and K+ prefer bi-dentate chelate in these complexes. The computed results indicate that metal ion affinity (MIA) in GlcNAc is higher than that in D-GlcN. There are direct correlations between the MIA...

Exact diffusion-induced elastic fields of a spherical core-shell nano-electrode li-ion battery via spectral theory

    , Article Journal of the Electrochemical Society ; Volume 167, Issue 13 , 2020 Shodja, H. M ; Shahryari, B ; Azizi, P ; Roumi, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    IOP Publishing Ltd  2020
    Abstract
In Li-ion batteries the interface between the nano-size spherical core graphite and its surrounding solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer, just inside SEI is susceptible to damage. Thus, accurate determination of the associated elastic fields is one of the challenges in optimizing the lifetime and capacity of Li-ion batteries. The required precision is achieved by considering the core graphite which belongs to the crystal class D6h as homogeneous spherically isotropic and SEI layer as functionally graded (FG) isotropic material. Moreover, to account for the surface/interface effects appropriately the core-shell nano-structure subjected to the diffusion-induced time-dependent nonuniform...

A simple, highly regioselective and efficient reaction of indole with epoxides under solvent-free conditions

    , Article Canadian Journal of Chemistry ; Volume 84, Issue 5 , 2006 , Pages 800-803 ; 00084042 (ISSN) Azizi, N ; Mehrazma, S ; Saidi, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
Lithium perchlorate has been found to be an inexpensive and efficient catalyst for the ring opening of epoxides by indole and N-methylindole, which provides an environmentally friendly method for the synthesis of substituted indoles. A complete regioselectivity in favor of nucleophilic attack at the benzylic carbon atom of aromatic epoxides, such as styrene oxide, is observed. However, aliphatic unsymmetrical alkene oxides undergo selective nucleophilic attack at the sterically less-hindered carbon atom. This catalyst offers several advantages, such as short reaction time, high yields, lower catalytic loading, simple experimental procedure, and easy isolation of the products, under...

    Abstract
Lithium batteries have been widely used to power up implantable medical devices such as pacemakers that are often designed to treat, diagnose, and prevent different diseases. However, due to their limited capacity and lifetime, patients have to undergo a surgical procedure to replace the discharged battery. Recently, nanogenerators have been emerged and are broadly accepted since they can convert tiny biomechanical forces, such as heartbeats, into electrical energy. This study aims to manufacture a biocompatible and high-performance piezoelectric energy harvester (PEH) that is capable to be charged by the energy received from the heartbeat and store the generated voltage. In this research, a...

    Abstract
Herein, we report a new strategy for improving the efficiency and reducing the fabrication cost of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) by elimination of the three- or four-fold layer deposition of TiO2. This is performed by replacing a single layer deposition of mesoporous TiO2 beads, with sub-micrometer size, high surface area and tunable pore size, synthesized by a combination of sol-gel and solvothermal methods. Furthermore, superior electronic properties gained by a reduction in electronic trap states are achieved through doping of pristine TiO2 beads with lithium. The beads have a spherical shape with monodispersed texture consisting of anatase-TiO2 nanocrystals and ultra-fine pores. The...

    Abstract
We introduce an effective method for copper indium sulfide selenide (CISSe) doping with different alkali metals (Li, Na and K) based on a pre-deposited alkali chloride layer. A simple and fast spray method is used for pre-deposition of alkali chloride layer (LiCl, NaCl, KCl) on substrate surface before spray pyrolysis deposition of copper indium disulfide CuInS2 (CIS) films followed by selenization. The different properties of alkali-doped CISSe films by the alkali chloride pre-deposition (ACPD) method were compared to the post-deposition treatment (PDT) method. Based on FESEM images, a highly compact film with large grains can be obtained for CISSe films doped with K(∼0.72 μm) and Na (∼0.56...
