    Abstract
In this paper, the extended finite element method is presented for thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) modeling of impermeable discontinuities in saturated porous media. The X-FEM technique is applied to the THM governing equations for the spatial discretization, followed by a generalized Newmark scheme for the time domain discretization. The displacement field is enriched by the Heaviside and crack tip asymptotic functions, and the pressure and temperature fields are enriched by the Heaviside and appropriate asymptotic functions. The process is accomplished by partitioning the domain with triangular sub-elements. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the capability of proposed technique...

    , Article Computational Plasticity XI - Fundamentals and Applications, COMPLAS XI ; 2011 , Pages 996-1007 ; 9788489925731 (ISBN) Moslemi, H ; Khoei, A.R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, the continuum damage mechanics model originally proposed by Lemaitre [1] is presented through an adaptive finite element method for three-dimensional ductile materials. The macro-crack initiation-propagation criterion is used based on the distribution of damage variable in the continuum damage model. The micro-crack closure effect is incorporated to simulate the damage evolution more realistic. The Zienkiewicz-Zhu posteriori error estimator is employed in conjunction with a weighted superconvergence patch recovery (SPR) technique at each patch to improve the accuracy of error estimation and data transfer process. Finally, the robustness and accuracy of proposed computational...

    , Article Journal of Applied Polymer Science ; Volume 119, Issue 6 , September , 2011 , Pages 3347-3359 ; 00218995 (ISSN) Yazdi, A. Z ; Bagheri, R ; Kazeminezhad, M ; Heidarian, D ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
The objective of the present study is to predict Young's modulus of polymer-layered silicate nanocomposites (PLSNs) containing fully intercalated structures. The particular contribution of this article is to consider the changes in structural parameters of different intercalated morphologies in vicinity of each other. These parameters include aspect ratio of intercalated stacks, number of silicate layers per stack, d-spacing between the layers, modulus of the gallery phase, and volume fraction of each intercalated morphology. To do this, the effective particle concept has been employed and combined with the Mori-Tanaka micromechanical model. It has been shown that the simultaneous effects of...

    , Article Archive of Applied Mechanics ; Volume 85, Issue 11 , November , 2015 , Pages 1701-1717 ; 09391533 (ISSN) Khosoussi, S ; Mondali, M ; Abedian, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer Verlag  2015
    Abstract
An analytical approach is proposed for studying the elastic–plastic behavior of short-fiber-reinforced metal matrix composites under tensile loading. In the proposed research, a micromechanical approach is employed, considering an axisymmetric unit cell including one fiber and the surrounding matrix. First, the governing equations and the boundary conditions are derived and the elastic solution is obtained based on some shear-lag-type methods. Since under normal loading conditions and according to the fiber material characteristics, the metal matrix undergoes plastic deformation, while the fiber remains within the elastic region, a plastic deformation is considered for the matrix under each...

Characterization of polyamide 6/carbon nanotube composites prepared by melt mixing-effect of matrix molecular weight and structure

    , Article Composites Part B: Engineering ; Volume 78 , 2015 , Pages 50-64 ; 13598368 (ISSN) Faghihi, M ; Shojaei, A ; Bagheri, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2015
    Abstract
Effects of molecular weight and structure of polyamide 6 (PA6) on morphology and properties of PA6/MWCNT prepared by melt mixing were investigated. Microscopic analysis showed fine dispersion of MWCNT within low viscosity PA6s due to domination of melt infiltration into MWCNT agglomerate at low viscosity matrices with linear structure. Rheological data indicated good interfacial interaction with no percolation of MWCNT up to 2 wt% loading. DSC thermograms showed nucleating role of MWCNT on crystallization of PA6s with marginal effect on crystallinity. Experimental data supported with micromechanical model showed limited improvement on mechanical properties, but it was closely consistent with...

    Abstract
This project is a new pressure model for propagating pressure inside one or several tissues at the time of treatment with high intensity focus ultrasound (HIFU). Pressure's changes are converted to heat's changes in tissue and this is done oscillatory. When the treatment is done in deeper tissues, obtained heat can affect surficial tissues. This pressure effect also can enter surficial tissues. Amount of pressure and heat possible injury can be controlled and reduced through this mechanical modelling. In this model we have used three layers and pressure also is obtained within these three layers and is investigated averagely. Obtained tissue in this mood is kidney tissue and it is tried to...

    Abstract
The finite element method has been used to predict the stress intensity factors for cracked annular discs under constant central torque. Linear elastic fracture mechanics finite element analyses have been performed and the results are demonstrated in the form of crack configuration factors. To this end, the extensive ranges of crack configuration factors have been employed while considering the effect of disc stiffness. Then, the finite element results are applied to develop equivalent prediction equations using a statistical multiple nonlinear regression model. The accuracy of this model is measured using a multiple coefficient of determination, R2, where 0 ≤R2 ≤1. This coefficient is found...

    Abstract
In this paper, an integration approach consists of implementation of true internal state variables constitutive model to finite element (FE) analysis is presented. From the approach, the deformation homogeneity during severe plastic deformation of sheet (SPD) is investigated. Since there is not any constitutive model for large deformation that based on appropriated physical assumptions, here a new constitutive model is proposed that is entirely based on metallurgical mechanisms. Also, in order to achieve accurate results with low computation time, a new approach for integration of the constitutive model to FE analysis is presented. By coupling the constitutive model and FE analysis, the...

    Abstract
The shape and morphology of endothelial cells (ECs) lining the blood vessels are a good indicator for atheroprone and atheroprotected sites. ECs of blood vessels experience both wall shear stress (WSS) and cyclic stretch (CS). These mechanical stimuli influence the shape and morphology of ECs. A few models have been proposed for predicting the morphology of ECs under WSS or CS. In the present study, a mathematical cell population model is developed to simulate the morphology of ECs under combined WSS and CS conditions. The model considers the cytoskeletal filaments, cell–cell interactions, and cell–extracellular matrix interactions. In addition, the reorientation and polymerization of...

    Abstract
An integrated model based on finite-element method has been proposed to examine the mechanical and thermal responses of strips and work-rolls in tandem and reverse cold rolling operations. The model has been developed such that the influence of various process parameters, such as lubrication, rolling speed, frictional state and back-up rolls, can be examined. Thermal behaviors of the rolled material and the work-rolls have been analyzed using stream-line upwind Petrov-Galerkin approach, in order to make the model applicable to high-speed rolling processes, as well. The results have been compared to the actual on-line measurements and shown to be of acceptable accuracy. Such modeling approach...

    Abstract
Low back pain is the most prevalent orthopedic disorder and the first main cause of poor working functionality in developed as wells as many developing countries. In Absence of noninvasive in vivo measurement approaches, biomechanical models are used to estimate mechanical loads on human joints during physical activities. To estimate joint loads via musculoskeletal models, the calculation of muscle forces are of importance. It is however difficult to estimate muscle forces as the number of muscles, i.e. unknown parameters, is far more than the existing degrees of freedom; the system is highly redundant. Therefore, in this study, instead of muscle forces estimation, their effects (i.e.,...

A model-based approach for estimation of changes in lumbar segmental kinematics associated with alterations in trunk muscle forces

    , Article Journal of Biomechanics ; Volume 70 , March , 2018 , Pages 82-87 ; 00219290 (ISSN) Shojaei, I ; Arjmand, N ; Meakin, J ; Bazrgari, B ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The kinematics information from imaging, if combined with optimization-based biomechanical models, may provide a unique platform for personalized assessment of trunk muscle forces (TMFs). Such a method, however, is feasible only if differences in lumbar spine kinematics due to differences in TMFs can be captured by the current imaging techniques. A finite element model of the spine within an optimization procedure was used to estimate segmental kinematics of lumbar spine associated with five different sets of TMFs. Each set of TMFs was associated with a hypothetical trunk neuromuscular strategy that optimized one aspect of lower back biomechanics. For each set of TMFs, the segmental...

    Abstract
Spinal posture including thorax/pelvis orientations as well as loads on the intervertebral discs are crucial parameters in biomechanical models and ergonomics to evaluate the risk of low back injury. In vivo measurement of spinal posture toward estimation of spine loads requires the common motion capture techniques and laboratory instruments that are costly and time-consuming. Hence, a closed loop algorithm including an artificial neural network (ANN) and fuzzy logic is proposed here to predict the L5–S1 segment loads and thorax/pelvis orientations in various 3D reaching activities. Two parts namely a fuzzy logic strategy and an ANN from this algorithm; the former, developed based on the...
