, Article Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering ; Volume 8631 , 2013 ; 0277786X (ISSN) ; 9780819494009 (ISBN) Karimi, F ; Khorasani, S ; The Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE) ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
Here, an in-depth study of a novel electro-optic phenomenon suggested earlier in optical waveguides, referred to as the conducting interfaces, is carried out. It is shown that it would be possible to achieve a very strong optical modulation effect in slab waveguides fabricated on the standard III-V InAlGaAs compound platform. The electro-optic effect is obtained by controlling the density and population of the electron and hole states in the well layer. The additional phase shift contributed to the reflection phase of the guided electromagnetic wave constitutes an ultrastrong source of optical modulation and phase control. It is estimated that a Mach-Zhender configuration based on this...

Effect of lanthanum doping on the lifetime of Co/γ-Al 2O 3 catalysts in Fischer-Tropsch synthesis

    , Article Journal of the Taiwan Institute of Chemical Engineers ; Volume 43, Issue 5 , September , 2012 , Pages 704-710 ; 18761070 (ISSN) Hemmati, M. R ; Kazemeini, M ; Zarkesh, J ; Khorasheh, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Cobalt-based catalysts were prepared on gamma alumina supports, and their behaviour for different Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) conditions was assessed. Although Co/γ-Al 2O 3 is a well-known FTS catalyst, its durability ought to be improved to make the industrial process economically feasible. The effect of lanthanum doping on the catalyst lifetime was examined utilising reactor tests and catalyst characterization techniques including TPR, ICP and N 2 porosimetry. Reactor test results revealed that an optimum amount of lanthanum improved catalyst activity and selectivity. Increasing amounts of lanthanum doping up to about 1.1wt% seemed to modify the chemical composition of the support...

In all cases simulation obtained less than 1 % error

Dynamic analysis of microrobots with Coulomb friction using harmonic balance method

    , Article Nonlinear Dynamics ; Volume 67, Issue 2 , 2012 , Pages 1357-1371 ; 0924090X (ISSN) Eigoli, A. K ; Vossoughi, G. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, we investigate the dynamic analysis of a strongly nonlinear microrobot using a three-term harmonic balance method. The employed locomotion concept, namely "friction drive principle," is based on the superposition of a horizontal vibration at the interface between the robot and work floor and an active variation of friction force, obtained by the vertical vibration of the base at the same interface. The equation of motion for the system reveals a parametrically excited oscillator with discontinuity for which the elastic force term is proportional to a signum function. The obtained periodic solution not only is of high accuracy, but also can predict the contribution of the...

    Abstract
This paper presents the design of a 6-bit active digital phase shifter in 0.18-μm CMOS technology. The active phase shifter synthesizes the required phase using a phase interpolation process by adding quadrature phased input signals. It uses a new quadrature all-pass filter for quadrature signaling with a wide bandwidth and low phase error. The phase shifter has simulated RMS phase error of <0.85° at 2.4-5 GHz. The average voltage gain ranges from 1.7 dB at 2.4GHz to -0.14 dB at 5 GHz. Input P1 dB is typically 1.3±0.9 dBm at 3.5 GHz for overall phase states

    Abstract
Dual active bridge isolated bidirectional DC converter (DAB-IBDC) has a poor efficiency at light loads and non-unity voltage conversion ratio. In this paper the current stress of the converter is analyzed and the effect of maximum phase shift ratio and leakage inductance on the current stress of the converter is investigated. In order to increase the efficiency of the converter and reduce the current stress, the current stress optimization has been done and the design procedure is presented. Simulation results are used to validate the results of the theoretical analysis. © 2017 IEEE

    Abstract
In this study, a new isolated high-gain switched-boost DC/DC converter employing two symmetrical switched-boost networks along with a modified control algorithm based on the combination of the pulse-width modulation (PWM) and phase-shift modulation is proposed. Utilising symmetrical switched-boost networks increase the voltage gain of the proposed converter, significantly. Moreover, applying the proposed switching algorithm on the proposed isolated switched-boost DC/DC converter leads to the following advantages: (i) high-voltage gain, (ii) zero voltage switching (ZVS) turn-on of two switches, (iii) ZVS turnoff of two switches and (iv) appearing three controllable parameters (the...

    Abstract
This paper presents a new implementation of adaptive beamforming algorithm that can be fully implemented on chip. It does not require the knowledge of the incoming signal direction or phase shifter characteristics. Besides, it eliminates the need for the ADC to convert the analog output signal to digital values for the microprocessor and the DAC to apply the calculated values to the control voltages of the analog phase shifters. Thus, it exhibits better convergence speed. In addition, the need for the complex and power-hungry processor is eliminated. Therefore, this implementation consumes less power. Analytical equations and constraints on system design parameters are derived, and the...

    Abstract
Cascaded split-source inverter (CSSI) is a new single-stage modular multilevel topology. Each cell of this converter converts DC to AC power in the buck or boost operation mode without any additional power switch. This paper develops a design method based on a detailed model for CSSI. This model shows that energy storage elements experience double-fundamental frequency ripples besides high-frequency ones. It accurately calculates voltage gains and capacitor voltage and inductor current ripples. On the other hand, common carrier-based multilevel modulations have been modified in terms of both reference and carrier signals to control the inverter under symmetric and asymmetric conditions. With...

    Abstract
The smart antenna technique as a method of improving the physical layer performance of OFDM WLANs is studied. For this purpose, a comparison of the smart antenna architectures for IEEE802.11a WLAN system using pre-FFT and post-FFT array processing with different parameters is represented. Simulations are performed on a new Simulink model for IEEE802.11a system using a spatio-temporal channel modeling which is based on the measured wideband channels in the 5GHz band. Raw bit-error-rate performance for QPSK/16QAM modulations at LOS and NLOS channel scenarios are evaluated and compared. © 2005 IEEE

    Abstract
The exact symbol and bit error probabilities of linearly modulated signals in frequency non-selective Rician fading channels with Lth diversity branches are derived, where coherent detection with maximum ratio combining (MRC) is used at the receiver. For performance evaluation, the multiplicative distortion is combined with the additive Gaussian noise and form an additive noise is formed. This method allows computing the exact symbol and bit error probabilities of M-ary phase shift keying (M-PSK), M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (M-QAM), M-ary amplitude modulation (M-AM) and M-ary amplitude modulation phase modulation (M-AMPM) for any arbitrary bit mappings. Abstract
A binary differential impulse radio-ultra wide band (IR-UWB) communication scheme over a single-mode optical fibre is examined. For a receiver structure, the conventional electrical receiver as well as an optical receiver structure, which is similar to the optical receiver used for digital, optically phase-modulated differential phase shift keying, are considered. The optical receiver can alleviate the IR-UWB receiver implementation challenges and it is studied for the first time in the context of IR-UWB. Considering various important noises, for example, phase noise, laser intensity noise, thermal noise and shot noise, analytical expressions for the error probability of the aforementioned...

Design of a Phased Array Receiver for 5G Applications

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tahbaz Alli, Parsa (Author) ; Sharif Bakhtiar, Mehrdad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Next-generation wireless communication requires phased-array systems to ensure Gb/s data communication. This work demonstrates a four-element phased array receiver based on N-path filters for the 5G-FR1 frequency band. The behaviour of the circuit including non-idealities and effects due to mismatch in the paths is modeled and verified via simulations. As the time-variant nature of the N-path filter introduces multiple frequency translations, third harmonic selection of the switching frequency rather than the fundamental helps to reduce the input frequency of the multiphase clock generator by a factor of three. Therefore, the proposed structure is capable of third harmonic reception as well...

On the contribution of circumferential resonance modes in acoustic radiation force experienced by cylindrical shells

    , Article Journal of Sound and Vibration ; Vol. 333, issue. 22 , October , 2014 , p. 5746-5761 Rajabi, M ; Behzad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A body insonified by a constant (time-varying) intensity sound field is known to experience a steady (oscillatory) force that is called the steady-state (dynamic) acoustic radiation force. Using the classical resonance scattering theorem (RST) which suggests the scattered field as a superposition of a resonance field and a background (non-resonance) component, we show that the radiation force acting on a cylindrical shell may be synthesized as a composition of three components: background part, resonance part and their interaction. The background component reveals the pure geometrical reflection effects and illustrates a regular behavior with respect to frequency, while the others...

    Abstract
In this paper, a reliable low power single phase grid-connected inverter for photovoltaic modules is proposed. The inverter has improved lifetime since large electrolytic capacitor is replaced with small film capacitor due to circuit topology, power processing and proper control scheme. Thus the main limiting component in single phase grid connected inverters is obviated. The proposed inverter consists of two power processing stages. First a dual active bridge (DAB) converter boosts the voltage of PV panel to approximately 440 V and eliminates impact of high dc bus voltage ripples. A proper feed forward control is proposed to regulate the dc bus voltage with high ripple. Simulation results...

    Abstract
A 6-bit passive phase shifter for 2.5- to 3.2-GHz frequency band has been designed and implemented in a standard 0.18- μm CMOS technology. A new switched-network topology has been proposed for implementing the 5.625 ° phase shift step. The insertion loss of the circuit is compensated with an on-chip bidirectional amplifier. The measured return losses of the circuit are better than 8 dB with output 1-dB compression point of +9.5 dBm in the transmit mode and noise figure of 7.1 dB in the receive mode. The fabricated phase shifter demonstrates an average rms phase error of less than 2° over the entire operation bandwidth, which makes it suitable for high-precision applications

    Abstract
A fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based delay line (or phase shifter) has been developed for microwave over fiber and phased array antenna (PAA) applications. The scheme uses band edge time delay of tunable fiber gratings to provide a continuously controllable microwave time delay or phase shift. Following the formulation and analysis of the device behavior, simulations of amplitude and phase responses are conducted. The results confirm the validity of theoretical predictions

Phase-noise measurement of microwave oscillators using phase-shifterless delay-line discriminator

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques ; Volume 58, Issue 2 , January , 2010 , Pages 468-477 ; 00189480 (ISSN) Gheidi, H ; Banai, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, a modified method based on the frequency discriminator technique for measuring phase noise of microwave oscillators is presented. In the proposed method, the phase shifter is omitted. In contrast, a 90° hybrid with one more channel containing a phase detector, and a low-noise amplifier is added to the measurement setup. It can be said that an in-phase/quadrature phase-noise detection has been developed. With the proposed method, tuning of the variable phase shifter is not needed anymore. Therefore, the measurement is done automatically, and as a result, the measurement time is decreased. Another considerable advantage of this method is that the method is theoretically...

    Abstract
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles draw electricity from the electrical grid and store energy in their batteries. To increase charge availability for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, on-board chargers can be used, which should be small in size and lightweight. In this article, an on-board bidirectional soft-switched battery charger is proposed that utilizes a phase-shift-controlled dual-bridge series resonant converter with isolation. The bidirectional characteristic of proposed charger makes it suitable for vehicle-to-grid operation (i.e., injecting power from the vehicle to the grid) in smart grids. A switching control scheme is also proposed to provide soft-switching operation for all...
