Multimodal soft nonnegative matrix go-factorization for convolutive source separation

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing ; Volume 65, Issue 12 , 2017 , Pages 3179-3190 ; 1053587X (ISSN) Sedighin, F ; Babaie Zadeh, M ; Rivet, B ; Jutten, C ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, the problem of convolutive source separation via multimodal soft Nonnegative Matrix Co-Factorization (NMCF) is addressed. Different aspects of a phenomenon may be recorded by sensors of different types (e.g., audio and video of human speech), and each of these recorded signals is called a modality. Since the underlying phenomenon of the modalities is the same, they have some similarities. Especially, they usually have similar time changes. It means that changes in one of them usually correspond to changes in the other one. So their active or inactive periods are usually similar. Assuming this similarity, it is expected that the activation coefficient matrices of their...

    Abstract
Recently, electrode-based Dielectrophoresis (eDEP) has been used for particle manipulation by means of triangular electrodes. In this theoretical and numerical study, a microchannel with quarter-of-ellipse electrodes is presented and a detailed comparison with triangular electrodes is provided. Electric field, resultant DEP force, and particle trajectories for each microchannel are evaluated by means of COMSOL Multiphysics 4.4. Afterwards, focusing and separation efficiencies of the systems are assessed and compared. Finally, separation efficiency of our proposed model for live and dead cells is compared with that of our previous model published in the literature [1]. It is demonstrated that...

    Abstract
Automated measurement of the intensity of spontaneous facial Action Units (AU) defined by the Facial Action Coding System (FACS) in video sequences is a challenging problem. This paper proposes a person-adaptive methodology for the intensity estimation of spontaneous AUs. We formulate this problem as a source separation problem where we consider the observed AUs as the source signals to be separated from each other and other information given by a sequence of facial images. We first compute an initial estimation of the sources, called observations, using sparse linear regression functions. We then develop and apply a Bayesian source separation method that recruits the prior information of...

Mixed-matrix composite membranes based on uio-66-derived MOFs for CO 2 separation

    , Article ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces ; Volume 11, Issue 9 , 2019 , Pages 9448-9461 ; 19448244 (ISSN) Molavi, H ; Shojaei, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    American Chemical Society  2019
    Abstract
We demonstrated a novel mixed-matrix composite membrane (MMCM) based on acrylated polyurethane (APU) and UiO-66 nanoparticles to separate CO 2 /N 2 mixture. UiO-66 and functionalized UiO-66 including NH 2 -UiO-66 and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA)-UiO-66 were loaded into APU/2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (APUH) matrix at variable concentrations between 3 and 30 wt %. APUH/GMA-UiO-66 MMCMs exhibited strong adhesion with a support layer of polyester/polysulfone, which was not deteriorated after immersion in water for a long time (20 days). Incorporation of UiO-66 and its functionalized forms increased simultaneously permeability and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity, which were indeed superior in comparison...

    Abstract
In this work, poly(vinyl) alcohol (PVA)/poly(ethylene) glycol (PEG) 600 g/mol cross-linked membranes with different alumina (Al2O3) content were synthesized. The membranes were then characterized by FTIR, TGA, DSC, SEM, mechanical strength and permeation properties for carbon dioxide and nitrogen gases at different operating temperatures. The FTIR results confirmed the acetal linkages of cross-linking at 1083 cm−1 and the presence of stretching and bending peaks of Al-O bond at 598 and 444 cm−1, respectively. TGA results showed that the thermal stabilities of the membranes improved with the addition of alumina particles. DSC analysis proved that the glass transition temperature of the...

Numerical investigation of second throat exhaust diffuser performance with thrust optimized parabolic nozzles

    , Article Aerospace Science and Technology ; Volume 105 , 2020 Fouladi, N ; Farahani, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Masson SAS  2020
    Abstract
Free or restricted shock separation phenomena can occur inside a thrust optimized parabolic (TOP) nozzle during over-expanded operations. In the case of restricted shock separation, a cap shock pattern forms in the nozzle which leads to a substantial total pressure drop. This induces further related issues in the process of ground testing of such nozzles using a second throat exhaust diffuser (STED). In the present study, the flow physics in several TOP nozzles operating at over-expanded conditions is investigated numerically. At first, the strong effect of the initial expansion angle of a TOP nozzle on flow separation pattern and shock structure is demonstrated. Results reveal that for high...

    Abstract
UF6 gas flow in the total regions of a rotor with the radius of 0.1 m and the length of 1 m in axisymmetric and steady states was simulated using a new hybrid CFD-DSMC method in the OpenFOAM framework. Implicit coupled density-based scheme was performed for CFD method, and Variable Hard Sphere (VHS) and diffuse model were employed in DSMC method. Also, as an initial estimation, the local Knudsen number was applied to determine the interface location between the continuum-rarefied regions (r = 0.0855 m). Then it was modified (r = 0.084 m) to reduce the computational cost. The comparison results of pure CFD and CFD-DSMC methods illustrated that there were large differences between the flow...

    , Article Chemical Engineering Science ; Volume 220 , 2020 Kamrani, S ; Mohammadi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
In this study, we numerically determined the performance of a microscale separator comprising a lateral and a main channel to separate a two-phase flow. It was aimed to conduct continuous phase through the lateral channel and dispersed phase through the main channel. The continuous and dispersed phases were modeled as incompressible Newtonian fluids with the corresponding interface tracked by the phase-field model. The dynamics, including pressure fluctuations in the separator, were further examined. It was mechanistically demonstrated how the geometry of the separator modulates the phase separation. Further examined were the influences of various geometrical parameters on the performance of...

    Abstract
The gas separation properties of ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) membranes containing 18 and 28 wt% of vinyl acetate (VA) were investigated in this study. The effects of membrane preparation conditions, such as thermal and thermal/wet phase inversion, and the type of solvent on the gas separation properties of EVA membranes were investigated. The permeation of pure O2, N2, CH4, and CO2 gases at different feed pressures ranging from 2 to 11 bar were examined. The results indicated that the CO2 permeability was evidently higher than those of the other gases. Furthermore, the solubility mechanism was found to be the dominant mechanism for permeation of gases through EVA membranes. Moreover, the...

Adaptive sparse source separation with application to speech signals

    , Article 2007 IEEE International Conference on Signal Processing and Communications, ICSPC 2007, Dubai, 24 November 2007 through 27 November 2007 ; 2007 , Pages 640-643 ; 9781424412365 (ISBN) Azizi, E ; Mohimani, G. H ; Babaie Zadeh, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
In this paper, a sparse component analysis algorithm is presented for the case in which the number of sources is less than or equal to the number of sensors, but the channel (mixing matrix) is time-varying. The method is based on a smoothed l0 norm for the sparsity criteria, and takes advantage of the idea that sparsity of the sources is decreased when they are mixed. The method is able to separate synthetic and speech data, which require very weak sparsity restrictions. It can separate up to 50 mixed signals while being adaptive to channel variation and robust against noise. © 2007 IEEE

    Abstract
Utilizing 3D and 2D porous materials modified by a superhydrophobic/philic coating for quick removal of oil from water and a continuous process of oil/water separation, respectively, has attracted a lot of attention recently. Here we report the separation capacities of one commercial and three home-made sponges, sprayed by a superhydrophobic coating, for a broad range of oils and solvents. The contact angle of water on the coated sponges is 162.5˚, whereas the pristine sponge shows a contact angle of 91.8˚ (these values are for sponge D which had the highest absorption capacity). We investigate the effects of the density of sponges and the dynamic viscosity of oils and solvents on the...

Fabrication, characterization, and electrochemical performance of the hdpe/sepiolite nanocomposite as a novel separator for li-ion batteries

    , Article Express Polymer Letters ; Volume 15, Issue 11 , 2021 , Pages 1063-1080 ; 1788618X (ISSN) Mohammadzad, M. Kh ; Pircheraghi, G ; Sharifi, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Separators are one of the most critically important components of lithium-ion batteries to ensure the safe performance of the battery. Commercial polyolefin separators have high thermal shrinkage and low electrolyte uptake, which confines the application of the battery. By using the thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) method, we successfully prepared HDPE/sepiolite nanocomposite separators with high thermal stability and electrolyte wettability. The sepiolite nanofibers are modified with the Vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES) as a coupling agent for better dispersion and interaction in the HDPE matrix. The purpose of fabricating this separator is to decrease the thermal shrinkage and...

    Abstract
In this work, gas dehydration and natural gas liquid (NGL) recovery by the Joule-Thomson (JT) process, were investigated using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling approach. Droplet behavior inside the separator was analyzed by particle tracing and moisture diffusion methods. The modified separator reduced the water content of natural gas from 0.008 to 0.0029 kg/m3. In addition, the separation efficiency was increased by addition of internal components. One of the added internal components was an inlet deflector. Among different inlet deflectors, the reversed type one exhibited the highest separation efficiency. The separation efficiency improved from 6 to 10% in the original...

    Abstract
The smoothness of the graph signals on predefined/constructed graphs appears in many natural applications of processing unstructured (i.e., graph-based) data. In the case of latent sources being smooth graph signals, blind source separation (BSS) quality can be significantly improved by exploiting graph signal smoothness along with the classic measures of statistical independence. In this paper, we propose a BSS method benefiting from the minimization of mutual information as a well-known independence criterion and also graph signal smoothness term of the estimated latent sources, and show that its performance is superior and fairly robust to the state-of-the-art classic and Graph Signal...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Boromand, Behnam (Author) ; Taghizadeh Manzari, Mehrdad (Supervisor) ; Zabihollah, Abolghasem (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the newest technologies in order to separate oil from water and also oil wastewater is the axial vortex separator technology (with commercial name of voraxial). In the current project, we analyze one of the voraxial (2000) separator systems types. In the modeling of voraxial system, we utilize a 3D model which is developed on the basis of commercial sample of voraxial 2000 technology, and conduct the solution of particles and fluid with Lagrangian Eulerian approach. Considering the k-ɛ turbulence model and an incompressible flow with the input of 30GPM and rotational velocity of 400RPM was another segment of the project. Due to the largeness of 10µ particles diameter, the Brownian...

Design and Simulation of a Passive Microfluidic Device for Particle Separation

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Vatankhah, Parham (Author) ; Shamloo, Amir (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nowadays, separation and filtration of particles has many industrial applications in biology and medicine. In this thesis, passive microfluidics are designed and simulated which are able to separate and filter particles. Although particles aer generally expected to follow laminar flow streamlines in the absence of external forces, inertial forxes van cause particles to migrate across mictochannels in an accurate and predictable manner. The effect of these forces is invedtigated, and by using previous research, a model is developed to predict these forces. First design is a microchannel with Archimedean spiral which utilizes both inertial forces and Dean flow to separate particles in the...

    Abstract
Today, microfluidic experiments have found wide applications in medical sciences, engineering, and chemistry. Because of their small size, microfluidic devices help us to be able to use very little amount of sample for the experiments and also easily control and observe the under-experiment fluid. One of the most important applications of these devices is the separation of cancer cells in blood for counting their number and DNA genetic studies. In the current project we have tried to do the separation of cancer cells from other cells by designing an inertia microchannel. For this purpose, in the first step a geometry for the channel is designed with analyzing the induced forces on the cells....

Fabrication of DEP-inertial Microfluidic Device for Focusing and Separation of Particles/Cells

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rezaei, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Mohammadi, Ali Asghar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Separation of particles and cells is one of the most important and practical methods in fields such as biomedicine, medicine and industry. In microfluidics There are various methods for particles and cells separation According to the source of them, they can be categorised as active and passive techniques. Active techniques rely on an external force field. The most important advantage of this method is controlling the force on the particles during the experiment. However, the flow speed is always limited because particles must be exposed to the outer force field for sufficient duration to achieve effective functionality. passive techniques depend entirely on the channel geometry or intrinsic...
