    Abstract
Mixed matrix membranes of synthesized polyurethane (PU) based on toluene diisocyanate (TDI), polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and polytetramethylene glycol (PTMG) with polyvinyl alcohol based polar silica particles were prepared by solution casting technique. The homogeneity and thermal properties of the prepared PDMS-PU/silica membranes were characterized using scanning electron microscope (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The SEM micrographs confirmed the distribution of silica particles in the polymer matrix without agglomerations. Gas permeation properties of membranes with different silica contents were studied for pure CO2, CH4, O2, He...

    Abstract
In the present research, two types of drug carriers based on mesoporous silica-coated magnetic graphene oxide, Fe3O4@GO@mSiO2, were synthesised and the pH-responsive behaviour for doxorubicin release was investigated. One type of the carrier was dendrimer-like multi ethylene amine grafted on Fe3O4@GO@mSiO2 and the other was dendrimer-like supramolecular polypseudorotaxane. Herein, α-cyclodextrin was used in the structure of supramolecular nanoparticles as a gatekeeper to inhibit the drug from escaping at neutral pH (the pH of healthy tissue). The drug release profile showed that the supramolecular nanocarrier was more sensitive to the pH changes. The content of drug release was about 100% at...

Continuous synthesis of plate-like silica microparticles using microfluidics

    , Article Journal of Flow Chemistry ; Volume 9, Issue 3 , 2019 , Pages 161-174 ; 2062249X (ISSN) Tamtaji, M ; Mohammadi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer International Publishing  2019
    Abstract
The synthesis of plate-like silica particles, which are of importance for a variety of applications, are mainly based on the widely adopted method of the sol-gel reaction of silicon alkoxides in traditional batch-wise instrumentation. In this study, continuous-flow synthesis of amorphous plate-like silica particles is reported through combining droplet-based microfluidics and the sol-gel reaction of tetraethyl orthosilicate. The reaction was conducted at the surface of oil droplets, comprising tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), suspended in acidic (HCl) water, resulting in silica particles on the surface of the droplets, leaving the device with outlet flow. The synthesized particles had...

Simultaneous preconcentration and speciation of iron(II) and iron(III) in water samples by 2-mercaptobenzimidazole-silica gel sorbent and flow injection analysis system

    , Article Analytica Chimica Acta ; Volume 424, Issue 2 , 2000 , Pages 233-242 ; 00032670 (ISSN) Bagheri, H ; Gholami, A ; Najafi, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
2-Mercaptobenzimidazole, loaded on silica gel (MBI-SG) was used for preconcentration and speciation of iron(II) and iron(III) in water samples. The speciation is based upon selective retention of iron(III) on MBI-SG sorbent and quantitatively passing iron(II) ions. This type of sorbent was not only capable of separating theses two ions but also could concentrate them. The adsorbed iron(III) on MBI-SG was desorbed from the column by an SCN- solution and transferred to the detection device. The effluent, then, was treated with hydrogen peroxide to oxidize iron(II) into iron(III) and subsequently was pumped through the MBI-SG column. A home-made flow injection system was coupled with a UV-VIS...

    Abstract
In this study, the potential of using a polyacrylamide-silica nanocomposite (PAM-S) to control the filtration properties of bentonite water-based drilling muds under different salinity conditions was evaluated. Static filtration tests under low-pressure/low-temperature (LPLT) conditions accompanied by rheological measurements have been carried out to analyze the role of silica nanoparticles (NPs) and nanocomposites (NCs) in the base fluid properties. Moreover, high-pressure/high-temperature (HPHT) static filtration was also investigated to evaluate the thermal stability of PAM-S. Afterward, dynamic filtration has been conducted in a filtration cell equipped with an agitating system with a...

Lipase immobilisation on magnetic silica nanocomposite particles: Effects of the silica structure on properties of the immobilised enzyme

    , Article Journal of Materials Chemistry ; Volume 22, Issue 17 , 2012 , Pages 8385-8393 ; 09599428 (ISSN) Kalantari, M ; Kazemeini, M ; Tabandeh, F ; Arpanaei, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Uniformly sized superparamagnetic single-shell nonporous (S1) and double-shell mesoporous silica nanocomposite particles with ∼130 nm magnetite cluster cores are synthesised in this study. Mesoporous particles are prepared with two BJH pore sizes (2.44 and 3.76 nm, designated as S2 and S3 particles, respectively). Once the lipase was immobilised on particles, our results showed that the enzyme loading capacities of mesoporous structures, i.e. S2 and S3, are higher than that for nonporous particles (S1). Hydrolytic activity tests reveal that immobilised lipases retain about 90% of the free enzyme's activity. Furthermore, comparing to the free enzyme, the thermal stability of immobilised...

    Abstract
In this study, the effect of agglomeration and non-uniform dispersion of silica particles on the mechanical and microstructural properties of cement paste incorporating silica fume and nanosilica (NS) with various specific surface areas (SSA) is experimentally investigated. The SSA and replacement percent of silica particles were considered as test variables and four series of mixes were made including one set of mixes for silica fume with a SSA of 20 m2/g and three sets of mixes for three different types of NS with SSA equal to 90, 200 and 380 m2/g. In each series of mix designs three different cement replacement percents of 1.5%, 3% and 5% were applied. The results indicate that as the SSA...

Fabrication of Fe-oxide@Silica@Gold (core/shell/shell) in Order to Development of Biomarkers

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mohammad-Beigi, Hossein (Author) ; Yaghmaei, Soheyla (Supervisor) ; Arpanaei, Ayyoob (Supervisor) ; Roosta Azad, Reza (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
The aim of this work is fabrication of magnetite@silica@gold particles. Study of the effect of pH showed that increasing pH from 9 to 12 resulted in a decrease in the size of magnetite nanoparticles from 7.9±1.38 nm to 5±0.64 nm. The TEM results indicated that modifying magnetic nanoparticles with sodium citrate prior to coating with silica leads to a narrow particle size distribution (275±16.1nm) and less number of silica nanoparticles without any magnetite core. Three methods were applied for attachment of gold nanoparticles seeds onto the silica surface: 1) use of an electrostatic interaction between positively-charged aminated silica and negatively-charged gold nanoparticles surfaces, 2)...

    Abstract
Control over the wettability of reservoir rocks is of crucial importance for enhancing oil and gas recovery. In order to develop chemicals for controlling the wettability of reservoir rocks, we present a study of functionalized silica nanoparticles as candidates for wettability alteration and improved gas recovery applications. In this paper, properties of fluorinated silica nanoparticles were investigated in water or decane-loaded pores of mineral silica using molecular dynamics simulation. Trifluoromethyl groups as water and oil repellents were placed on the nanoparticles. Simulating a pore in the presence of trapped water or decane molecules leads to liquid bridging for both of the...
