    Abstract
We introduce highly antifouling Polymer-Nanoparticle-Nanoparticle/Polymer (PNNP) hybrid membranes as multi-functional materials for versatile purification of wastewater. Nitrogen-rich polyethylenimine (PEI)-functionalized halloysite nanotube (HNT-SiO2-PEI) nanoparticles were developed and embedded in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) membranes for protein and dye filtration. Bulk and surface characteristics of the resulting HNT-SiO2-PEI nanocomposites were determined using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Moreover, microstructure and...

    Abstract
In this paper dynamic strain ageing behavior in an Al-Mg-Si alloy related to equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) was investigated. In order to examine the combined plastic deformation and ageing effects on microstructure evolutions and strengthening characteristics, the Al6061 alloy were subjected to φ=90° ECAP die for up to 4 passes via route Bc at high temperatures. For investigating the effects of ageing temperature and strain rate in ECAP, Vickers hardness tests were performed. The combination of the ECAP process with dynamic ageing at higher temperatures resulted in a significant increase in hardness. The microstructural evolution of the samples was studied using electron...

    Abstract
In this paper, dynamic ageing characteristics associated with the application of equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) to Al6061 alloy at elevated temperatures was investigated. Followed by ECAP, Vickers microhardness measurement on the cross-sectional planes and microstructural observations were undertaken using transmission electron microscopy. The combination of the ECAP process with dynamic ageing at both 100°C and 150°C resulted in a significant increase in hardness. The grain size was measured as ∼160. nm after four passes. A comparison with the published data on the same alloy processed by ECAP at room temperature and statically aged, suggests several advantages in incorporating...

    Abstract
Equal channel angular pressing is an outstanding method for imposing large plastic deformation to metallic materials without any decreasing in cross section area of as processed samples. In this paper, the effect of working temperature, ram speed and the number of passes on the formation of adiabatic shear bands in Al6061 during equal channel angular pressing was investigated. Billets of the alloy were processed up to four passes via route BC from room temperature to 200°C with two ram speeds using a die that imparts an effective strain of ∼1.1 per pass. The results have demonstrated that the onset of the adiabatic shear banding in this alloy strongly depends on the ram speed: more...

Enzymatic outside-in cross-linking enables single-step microcapsule production for high-throughput three-dimensional cell microaggregate formation

    Abstract
Cell-laden hydrogel microcapsules enable the high-throughput production of cell aggregates, which are relevant for three-dimensional tissue engineering and drug screening applications. However, current microcapsule production strategies are limited by their throughput, multistep protocols, and limited amount of compatible biomaterials. We here present a single-step process for the controlled microfluidic production of single-core microcapsules using enzymatic outside-in cross-linking of tyramine-conjugated polymers. It was hypothesized that a physically, instead of the conventionally explored biochemically, controlled enzymatic cross-linking process would improve the reproducibility,...

    Abstract
Porous silicon (PS) is widely utilized in gas sensors. Palladium is a good choice to sensitize the surface of PS to hydrogen. Ideally for highest sensitivity of the sensor, all the pores of PS should be completely covered with palladium. Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS) technique is routinely used to determine depth profile of elements in thin layers. By using microbeam analysis as a complementary technique, we clearly observed the lateral image of penetrated Pd in depth. In this work, we used electrochemically anodized-silicon wafer doped with Pd by the electroless process. In our analysis, we intentionally characterized both the area of PS where Electric Field is applied during...

    Abstract
The preparation and characterization of a new type of nanocomposite polyelectrolyte membrane, based on DuPont Nafion/imidazole-modified nanosilica (Im-Si), for direct methanol fuel cell applications is described. Related to the interactions between the protonated imidazole groups, grafted on the surface of nanosilica, and negatively charged sulfonic acid groups of Nafion, new electrostatic interactions can be formed in the interface of Nafion and Im-Si which result in both lower methanol permeability and also higher proton conductivity. Physical characteristics of these manufactured nanocomposite membranes were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetry analysis,...

    Abstract
Integrated silicon photonic networks have attracted a lot of attention in the recent decades due to their potentials for low-power and high-bandwidth communications. However, these promising networks, as the future technology, are drastically susceptible to thermal fluctuations, which may paralyze wavelength-based operation of these networks. In this regard, precise addressing of thermally induced faults in optical networks-on-chip (ONoCs), as well as revealing practical methods to tackle this challenge will be a break-even point toward implementation of this technology. In this paper, thermal variation is investigated through analyzing on-chip power distribution, which is addressed by power...

    Abstract
The effects of H2O/SiO2, TMAOH/SiO2, Na/(Na+K), and SiO2/Al2O3 ratios in the parent gels on the crystallization of nanoparticles of T-type zeolites were studied. A Taguchi orthogonal experimental design with the above-mentioned parameters (each at three levels) was used to optimize the experiment parameters by the analysis of variances (ANOVA). Applying the Taguchi method significantly reduced the time and cost required for optimization. The synthesized products were characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. As a result of the Taguchi analysis, H2O/SiO2 and TMAOH/SiO2 were the most influencing parameters for the synthesis of zeolite T. © 2009 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH...

    Abstract
In this paper, we report on a periodic metallo-dielectric structure that supports geometry-induced surface plasmons in the sub-terahertz regime. The proposed structure is made up of a dielectric-coated metallic grating sandwiched by parallel metal plates. Based on the modal analysis of 2D and 3D structures, the impact of a metal cladding and a customized dielectric coating on the dispersion relation and field distribution of the guided surface wave is investigated. It is found that modal field confinement is improved in the presence of a metal cladding without narrowing the operational bandwidth of the waveguide. Moreover, a customized subwavelength-sized dielectric coating based on...

    Abstract
Dielectric gratings (DGs) have recently been introduced as a new platform for guiding dielectric-based geometrically-induced surface plasmons (SPs) called spoof SPs (SSPs). In this paper, we report on the modal analysis of a metal-clad DG waveguide and compare its performance with other counterparts including the dielectric image guide (IG) and the metal grating (MG) waveguide. The proposed DG waveguide is made up of a periodic array of high-resistivity silicon (HR-Si) pillars on a metal plate with a metal cladding at a proper distance above the structure. By modal analysis of 2D and 3D structures, we show that the presence of the metal cladding enhances the modal field confinement without...

Organic halides and nanocone plastic structures enhance the energy conversion efficiency and self-cleaning ability of colloidal quantum dot photovoltaic devices

    , Article Journal of Physical Chemistry C ; Volume 121, Issue 18 , 2017 , Pages 9757-9765 ; 19327447 (ISSN) Tavakoli, M. M ; Simchi, A ; Tavakoli, R ; Fan, Z ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper presents solid-state ligand exchange of spin-coated colloidal lead sulfide quantum dot (PbS QD) films by methylammonium iodide (MAI) and integration of them in depleted heterojunction solar (DHS) devices having an antireflecting (AR) nanocone plastic structure. Time-resolved photoluminescence measurements determine a shorter lifetime of the charge carries on a semiconductor (TiO2) electron transfer layer for the MAI-passivated QD films as compared with those with long-chain aliphatic or short thiol ligands. Consequently, the DHS device yields improved power conversion efficiency (>125%) relative to oleic-acid-passivated PbS QD films. Using anodized aluminum oxide templates, an...

    Abstract
The continued migration to smaller nanometer geometries brought fundamental limits to traditional on-chip hard wires performance. According to the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductor (ITRS), feature size shrinking leads an increase in the operating frequency of RFCMOS devices. Thus, new interconnect methodologies such as radio frequency (RF) wireless can be employed on future chips projected for intra-chip wireless data communications. The size of Si integrated antenna in these frequencies will be several millimetres and the antenna length will be decrease by frequency increasing. In this paper, we have proposed an optimum radiation pattern achieved by a phased array (PA)...

    Abstract
The consolidation behavior of composite powders during pressure cycling at room temperature in uniaxial compaction experiments was studied and compared with monotonic compaction. Aluminum and various amounts of SiC powders (up to 50 vol%) were used to investigate the effect of hard reinforcement particle on the densification of soft aluminum matrix. The cyclic compaction was carried out at various pressure amplitudes, ranges from 90 to 360 MPa, at the frequency of 1 Hz. The pressure cycling was continued up to 5000 cycle, in which, the rate of consolidation was found to be fairly low. The consolidation of the composite powders under different loading modes was analyzed through...

    Abstract
Mechanical properties of nano-composites produced by shock wave sintering of aluminum and silicon carbide nano-powders are investigated using Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations. In this regard, the shock wave response of aluminum and silicon carbide nano-particles, arranged in a BCC super-lattice, is studied via the NPHug Hugoniostat method. Moreover, the effect of the initial hydrostatic compaction of powders as well as the cooling rate of the shocked material on the mechanical properties of the shock-sintered nano-composites is investigated. Employing the Hugoniot curves corresponding to the powders, it is concluded that an initial hydrostatic pressure, leads to a less temperature rise...

    Abstract
Linear silicone rubber and polyethylene alloy produced from extrusion-injecting process will be present in separate phases. While samples are mixed with 1% dicumylperoxide, DCP, and injected in extruder, an alloy is almost formed. In addition, when the samples containing silicon rubber with vinyl group are mixed with polyethylene and passed in the vicinity of electron beam, a similar reaction occurs, as confirmed from FTIR spectrum. The water contact angles for the samples has been listed in the article. Furthermore, the crystallinity of samples produced via electron beam method is more than that obtained from peroxide method. On the other hand, the tensile strengths of produced samples via...

    Abstract
In this contribution, the effect of physical immobilization of methylene blue (MB) into silica nanocomposites was investigated on the conversion and selectivity of the photooxygenation of anthracene and dihydroartemisinic acid (DHAA). Physically immobilized photocatalysts were synthesized through a developed Stöber method and were thoroughly characterized by UV–Vis, FTIR, XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM, HR-TEM, BET-BJH, and EDX analyses. Based on the TEM and UV–Vis results, it was determined that enhancement of the MB concentration as an organocatalyst for the Stöber reaction led to an increase in the size of the nanoparticles from 54 to 183 nm and a 21 nm blue shift in their UV–Vis spectra. Moreover,...
