    Abstract
Costly and time-consuming approaches for solder joint lifetime estimation in electronic systems along with the limited availability and incoherency of data challenge the reliability considerations to be among the primary design criteria of electronic devices. In this paper, an iterative machine learning framework is designed to predict the useful lifetime of the solder joint using a set of self-healing data that reinforces the machine learning predictive model with thermal loading specifications, material properties, and geometry of the solder joint. The self-healing dataset is iteratively injected through a correlation-driven neural network to fulfill the data diversity. Outcomes show a...

    Abstract
Nowadays, one of the most important challenges in developing greenhouses is meeting their energy demand. The other challenge is the high water consumption of evaporative-cooling systems in arid and semi-arid regions. In this study, a integrated dynamic model is developed to determine the greenhouse relative humidity, carbon dioxide, and temperature, considering transpiration. The model is applied to a greenhouse utilizing a ground to air heat transfer system, located in the Alborz province of Iran and the results are validated with experimental data. Energy and water performance of the greenhouse are evaluated for the case study greenhouse. Then, the model is applied to a greenhouse (similar...

    Abstract
Three novel geothermal-based organic Rankine cycle (ORC) systems are proposed to enhance the efficiency and for waste heat recovery purpose. The proposed systems are modeled based on a basic ORC system (concept 1), an ORC system with an internal heat exchanger (concept 2), and a regenerative ORC system (concept 3). Accordingly, two thermoelectric generators (TEG) are introduced into the systems to exploit the waste heat of the system. The condenser is replaced with a TEG unit while the other TEG unit is used to recover the waste heat of the reinjected geothermal fluid. A comprehensive numerical investigation is conducted to compare the proposed systems from the thermodynamic and...

Dynamic simulation of a trigeneration system using an absorption cooling system and building integrated photovoltaic thermal solar collectors

    , Article Journal of Building Engineering ; Volume 43 , November , 2021 ; 23527102 (ISSN) Jalalizadeh, M ; Fayaz, R ; Delfani, S ; Jafari Mosleh, H ; Karami, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2021
    Abstract
Solar systems are the most promising technologies to reduce building energy consumption. In recent years, one of the popular solar technologies is building integrated photovoltaic-thermal collectors, because of profitability and no need for separate architectural space. In this study, a new combination of glazed building integrated photovoltaic thermal solar collectors and an absorption cooling system, as a trigeneration system, to provide thermal and electrical energy demands of a case study residential building, is proposed. Dynamic simulation of the proposed system is performed using the TRNSYS-MATLAB co-simulator. Because there is no model for the glazed photovoltaic thermal solar...

Hydrogen production performance of a photovoltaic thermal system coupled with a proton exchange membrane electrolysis cell

    , Article International Journal of Hydrogen Energy ; Volume 47, Issue 7 , 2022 , Pages 4472-4488 ; 03603199 (ISSN) Salari, A ; Hakkaki Fard, A ; Jalalidil, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
As one of the cleanest energies, hydrogen has attracted much attention over the past decade. Hydrogen can be produced using water electrolysis in a Proton Exchange Membrane Electrolysis Cell (PEMEC). In the present study, the performance of the PEMEC, powered by the Photovoltaic-Thermal (PVT) system, is scrutinized. It is considered that the PVT system provides the required electrical power of the PEMEC and preheats the feedwater. A comprehensive numerical model of the coupled PVT-PEMEC system is developed. The model is used to investigate the effect of various operating parameters, including solar radiation intensity, inlet feedwater temperature, and feedwater mass flow rate, on the...

Investigations on the effects of the tool material, geometry, and tilt angle on friction stir welding of pure titanium

    , Article Journal of Materials Engineering and Performance ; Volume 19, Issue 7 , 2010 , Pages 955-962 ; 10599495 (ISSN) Reshad Seighalani, K ; Besharati Givi, M. K ; Nasiri, A. M ; Bahemmat, P ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Friction stir welding (FSW) parameters, such as tool material, tool geometry, tilt angle, tool rotational speed, welding speed, and axial force play a major role in the weld quality of titanium alloys. Because of excessive erosion, tool material and geometry play the main roles in FSW of titanium alloys. Therefore, in the present work for the first time, tool material and geometry, tool tilt angle, cooling system and shielding gas effects on macrostructure, microstructure, and mechanical properties of pure titanium weld joint were investigated. Result of this research shows that Ti can be joined by the FSW, using a tool with a shoulder made of tungsten (W) and simple pin made of tungsten...

Application of ozone treatment and pinch technology in cooling water systems design for water and energy conservation

    , Article International Journal of Energy Research ; Volume 34, Issue 6 , 2010 , Pages 494-506 ; 0363907X (ISSN) Ataei, A ; Gharaie, M ; Parand, R ; Panjeshahi, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
Re-circulating cooling water systems offer the means to remove heat from a wide variety of industrial processes that generate excess heat. Such systems consist of a cooling tower and a heat-exchanger network that conventionally has a parallel configuration. However, reuse of water between different cooling duties allows cooling water networks to be designed in a series arrangement. This results in performance improvement and increased cooling tower capacity. In addition, by the integration of ozone treatment into the cooling tower, the cycle of concentration can be increased. The ozone treatment also dramatically reduces the blow-down that, in turn, is environmentally constructive. In this...

A techno-economic analysis of geothermal ejector cooling system

    , Article Energy ; Volume 193 , 15 February , 2020 Habibi, M ; Aligolzadeh, F ; Hakkaki Fard, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
Ground-coupled ejector cooling (GCEC) systems have been introduced to solve the air-coupled ejector cooling (ACEC) systems problems. To date, no research study is dedicated to compare the GCEC and the ACEC systems and determine the relative payback period of the GCEC system vs. the ACEC system. Furthermore, almost all the previous studies simulated the GCEC systems by elementary models. Therefore, a comprehensive simulation is conducted to assess the techno-economic performance of a GCEC system. The model consists of the ejector and the borehole heat exchanger submodels. The first section of the results compares the ACEC system and the GCEC system during a cooling season. The seasonal...

    Abstract
Liquid air energy storage is one of the most recent technologies introduced for grid-scale energy storage. As the title implies, this technology offers energy storage through an air liquefaction process. High energy storage density, no geographical limitation, and applicability for large-scale uses are some of the advantages of this technology. To improve the performance and environmental friendliness of the conventional design of this technology, a novel liquid air energy system combined with high-temperature thermal energy storage, thermoelectric generator, and organic Rankine cycle is proposed in the present article. The thermal energy storage unit removes the need for the conventional...
