- Non-destructive Testing (NDT) methodsare among the most important ways that are used for inspection of industrial products. It can measure non-visible properties of material such as defect size and inclusions that is inside of the object.NDT is included several tests such as visual examination, eddy current testing, ultrasonic testing and radiographic testing.Radiography is one of the most common NDT methods that are used to detect the defects in objects by registering an image of the object on the radiography film. Corrosion is one of the most important defects in pipelines, where the most important concern is measuring the remaining thickness in corroded zone.
In this study, some radiographic images were obtained from a test pipe that has known artificial corrosion. Then, corrosion profile and attenuation coefficient of x-rayswere extracted by using these images. Besides, a simulation was carried out by MCNPx Monte Carlo code. In this simulation, by using radiography tally of MCNPx code, radiographic condition was performed and simulated data for images were generated and then converted to images. After that corrosion profile from these images was also obtained, and compared with experimental corrosion profiles. Due to existing of photon scattering noise and systematic errors in the experiments, the corrosion profile of the practical images were different from simulation images. The resolution and contrast of simulation images were better than experiment images, because of some practical steps that are in experiment and are not in simulation, such as film processing after exposure.In simulation, MCNPx tally; F5;was implemented for calculating the attenuation coefficient by simulation. It is shown that corrosion map can be determined precisely by radiographic images and can be evaluated by simulation - Keywords:
