Child Effect on Female Employment: Evidence from Iran with a Structural Approach

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hasheminasab, Jalal (Author) ; Keshavarz Haddad, Gholamreza (Supervisor) ; Moeini, Safoura (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This research answers two questions: First, what effect does the increase in the number of children have on women's employment? Second, what is the magnitude of the effect of increasing the number of children on the potential employment rate of Iranian women? To address the first question, we use Heckman's reduced form regression along with a structural model of female labor supply. We use the Simulated Method Moments (SMM) to estimate the structural equations. Our data for the empirical analysis are taken from the Iranian Households’ Income and Expenditures Surveys in urban areas over the years 1990 to 2020. We use the estimated model to measure the potential increase in female employment...

The Hidden Side of Coin: What Self Leadership Strategies Are Applied by Successful Iranian Women Entrepreneurs?

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mirhosseini, Minoo (Author) ; Alavi, Babak (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Women are going to play more important roles in the economy of most countries including Iran. Hence, since the number of entrepreneurs among women is increasing, identifying characteristics and other factors that cause these group to be successful, is a critical issue. Studies show that entrepreneurs, especially women entrepreneurs, face numerous problems in their career. These problems are especially more demanding in societies with unique cultural attributes. Therefore, applying personal and managerial solutions in order to overcome these problems are necessary. On the other hand, researchers believe that one of the most effective and beneficial concepts helping entrepreneurs in their...

Factors Affecting Labor Market Participation Rate of Married Women in Iran

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Farahzadi, Shadi (Author) ; Rahmati, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Iran has one of the lowest rates of female participation in the labor market among countries. In 2015, for every 100 men over 10 years old, only 21 women’s labor force participation was confirmed. This paper attemps to determine factors which cause low participation rate of women, particularly married ones. For this purpose, using structural estimation method, a dynamic discrete choice model was built, and estimated with means of simulated method of moments (SSM). The results indicated that the most important factor for low participation rate of married woman is children cost. Elimination of this cost would increase participation rate of married women about 30 percantage points

Woman-Headed Household and Household Welfare An Emprical Study for Iran

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khoram, Azar (Author) ; Suri, Davood (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This research aimed to investigate the relationship between household poverty and the gender of the head in the Iranian households. The self-reported gender of the head of household (FHH), underestimates the rate of poverty in female- head households (FHH). The self-reported gender of the head of household considers, conventionally, a family as male-head, even if the man of the family is incapable of making money. In much of these families the wife is the sole income holder even though she is not recognized as the head. In this study, a definition for household headship is introduced, which considers head of household the one who provides more than 50% of household income. Using household’s...

Gender Ratio and Intra-Household Collective Decision Process:Evidence from Iranian Household Labor Supply

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Borhani, Fatemeh (Author) ; Keshavarz Haddad, Gholamreza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This paper provides and empirical investigation of individual labor supply of Iranian spouses in a collective framework in which gender ratio and plays a central role in the decision process in household. The data set is taken from the socioeconomic characteristics of panel survey over 2001-2004 and ten yearly headcount of Iran. We have conducted the parameters estimation and hypothesis testing by Semykina, A. and Wooldridge, J.M., (2005) generalized procedure of sample selection in panel data model. Our findings explore that females’ labor supply is affected significantly and strongly by the gender ratio, (total number of males over the females in provinces, both in urban and rural areas)....

Individual Married Female Labor Supply: An Application of Parametric & Non-Parametric Econometric Analysis

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Bagheri Ghanbarabadi, Morteza (Author) ; Keshavarz Haddad, Gholamreza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Iranian female participation rate in the labor market of Iran in the recent decade shows a raising trend which amounted from 8% in 1999 to 18% in 2005. Using Parametric and Non-parametric econometrics Methods, in this research we aim to study the behavior of individual female labor supply. Our dataset consist of the annually budget survey of 2006 which is reported by statistical center of Iran. Our findings from parametric analysis show that the number of less than 6-years old children, non-labor income, husband’s income and geographic area (rural or urban district) are the main determinants of women’s participation in the labor market, and they affect negatively probability of the market...

The Study of Eliminating Gender Gap in Iran Labor Market on Participation Rate of Married Urban Women

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Asghari, Fatemeh (Author) ; Rahmati, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor) ; Joshaghani, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The low female labor force participation rate in the Iranian labor market relative to the global average and even to countries that do not differ significantly from the socio-economic characteristics of our country is one of the important questions of the Iranian labor market. In this study, we seek to answer the question of whether the economic participation rate of married women will increase if the gender gaps in wages, job findings and job losses among women and men are eliminated in the Iranian labor market. To answer this question using household expenditure and income data and labor force data, we show that between the two categories of occupations, in terms of the share of women's...

Relationship between Fertility and Female Labor Participation in Iran

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Asadi, Ghadir (Author) ; Keshavarz Haddad, Gholamreza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Despite the fact that total fertility rate has a drastic decrease from 6.6 in 1980 to 1.8 childeren in 2008 and their education was highly growing in the last two decades, their participation in labor market is stillrelatively low(with maximum rate of 17.5 in 2007). Making use of the Iranian Household Expenditure and Income Survey(HEIS) and yearly labor market surveys (1984-2009), we intend to investigate the interaction between fertility(FER) and female labor participation(FLP) in Iran, for both the population with ages of 10-64 and 18-30. We use simultaneousequations by GMM to estimate the system of equation. Our findings show that the sign of FER’s determinants are as expected, but FLP...

    Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the utility and efficacy of finger photoplethysmogram pulse amplitude (PPG-AC) in comparison with the standard Doppler ultrasound in assessing an endothelial function via flow-mediated dilation (FMD). High-resolution B-mode scanning of the right brachial artery (BA) of 31 healthy subjects aged 39.7 ± 11.3 (range 22-64) years and 52 risk subjects aged 47.7 ± 10.8 (range 30-65) years were performed before and after 4 min of upper arm occlusion. Concurrent with the ultrasound measurement (where color Doppler imaging was used to enhance arterial boundary detection), PPG signals were recorded from both index fingers for cross evaluation and comparison. Our...

Analysis of the effect of ageing on rising edge characteristics of the photoplethysmogram using a modified windkessel model

    , Article Cardiovascular Engineering ; Volume 7, Issue 4 , 2007 , Pages 172-181 ; 15678822 (ISSN) Zahedi, E ; Chellappan, K ; Mohd Ali, M. A ; Singh, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
Ageing is one of the main contributing factors towards increasing arterial stiffness, leading to changes in peripheral pulses propagation. Therefore the characteristics of the photoplethysmogram (PPG) pulse, especially the rising edge and peak position, are greatly affected. In this study, the PPG pulse rising edge and corresponding peak position have been investigated non-invasively in human subjects as a function of age. Fifteen healthy subjects were selected and grouped in five age intervals, from 20 to 59 years, based on their comparable systolic-diastolic blood pressure and PPG amplitude. As expected, the peripheral pulse shows a steep rise and early peak in younger subjects. With age,...

    Abstract
Scar tissue size following myocardial infarction is an independent predictor of cardiovascular outcomes, yet little is known about factors regulating scar size. We demonstrate that collagen V, a minor constituent of heart scars, regulates the size of heart scars after ischemic injury. Depletion of collagen V led to a paradoxical increase in post-infarction scar size with worsening of heart function. A systems genetics approach across 100 in-bred strains of mice demonstrated that collagen V is a critical driver of postinjury heart function. We show that collagen V deficiency alters the mechanical properties of scar tissue, and altered reciprocal feedback between matrix and cells induces...

    Abstract
Early onset adjacent segment degeneration (ASD) can be found within six months after anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF). Deficits in deep paraspinal neck muscles may be related to early onset ASD. This study aimed to determine whether the morphometry of preoperative deep neck muscles (multifidus and semispinalis cervicis) predicted early onset ASD in patients with ACDF. Thirty-two cases of early onset ASD after a two-level ACDF and 30 matched non-ASD cases were identified from a large-scale cohort. The preoperative total cross-sectional area (CSA) of bilateral deep neck muscles and the lean muscle CSAs from C3 to C7 levels were measured manually on T2-weighted magnetic resonance...

    Abstract
Background: Oral rehydration solution (ORS) is a form of oral rehydration therapy (ORT) for diarrhoea that has the potential to drastically reduce child mortality; yet, according to UNICEF estimates, less than half of children younger than 5 years with diarrhoea in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) received ORS in 2016. A variety of recommended home fluids (RHF) exist as alternative forms of ORT; however, it is unclear whether RHF prevent child mortality. Previous studies have shown considerable variation between countries in ORS and RHF use, but subnational variation is unknown. This study aims to produce high-resolution geospatial estimates of relative and absolute coverage of...

    Abstract
Sit-to-stand (STS) is an important functional task affected by low back pain (LBP). It requires fundamental coordination among all segments of the body to control important performance variables such as body's center of mass (CM) and head positions. This study was conducted to determine whether LBPs could coordinate their multiple joints to achieve the task stability to the same extent as healthy controls. About 11 non-specific chronic LBP and 12 healthy control subjects performed STS task at three postural difficulty levels: rigid surface - open eyes (RO), rigid surface - closed eyes (RC) and narrow surface - closed eyes (NC). Motion variability of seven body segments, CM and head positions...

    Abstract
Cervical cancer is the second-most-common cause of malignancies in women worldwide, and the oncogenic activity of the human papilloma virus types (HPV) E7 protein has a crucial role in anogenital tumors. In this study, we have designed a therapeutic vaccine based on chitosan nanodelivery systems to deliver HPV-16 E7 DNA vaccine, considered as a tumor specific antigen for immunotherapy of HPV-associated cervical cancer. We have developed a Nano-chitosan (NCS) as a carrier system for intramuscular administration using a recombinant DNA vaccine expressing HPV-16 E7 (NCS-DNA E7 vaccine). NCS were characterized in vitro for their gene transfection ability. Results: The transfection of CS-pEGFP...

    Abstract
Recently graph theory and complex networks have been widely used as a mean to model functionality of the brain. Among different neuroimaging techniques available for constructing the brain functional networks, electroencephalography (EEG) with its high temporal resolution is a useful instrument of the analysis of functional interdependencies between different brain regions. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease, which leads to substantial cognitive decline, and eventually, dementia in aged people. To achieve a deeper insight into the behavior of functional cerebral networks in AD, here we study their synchronizability in 17 newly diagnosed AD patients compared to 17 healthy...

Perylene diimide-POSS network for semi selective solid-phase microextraction of lung cancer biomarkers in exhaled breath

    , Article Analytica Chimica Acta ; Volume 1198 , 2022 ; 00032670 (ISSN) Soufi, G ; Bagheri, H ; Yeganeh Rad, L ; Minaeian, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Lung cancer (LC) is the leading cause of cancer mortality so, the analysis of exhaled human breath has great significance for early non-invasive diagnosis. Poor selectivity and strong humidity are two bottlenecks for the application of gas sensors to exhaled breath analysis. The development of novel extractive phases for the analysis of exhaled breath by chromatography is therefore a lucrative object. Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) are among the 3D porous materials whose unique properties make them promising coatings for solid-phase microextraction (SPME). Selective enrichment of polar or nonpolar targets depends on the pore size and functional groups on the POSSs. Herein, we...
