Assessing and Comparing Risk indices in BOT and DBB Delivery Methods in Freeway and Highway Construction Projects

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shahbazi, Reza (Author) ; Khaloo, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The present survey study aims at investigating and comparing risk indices in highway and freeway projects implemented through Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) and Design-Bid-Build (DBB) delivery methods. In this regard, two distinct questionnaires were developed (one for BOT and one for DBB delivery method) and interviews were conducted, too. The questionnaires were, then, sent to the target population, i.e. all the experts and agents involved in highway and freeway construction projects implemented through either BOT or DBB method. The collected data were then submitted to Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), version 22.00, to be analyzed. The results showed that risks had generally...

Managing Mega Project Construction Project with Method of Cost Management Approach (Case Study on the world’s fourth Mega Project)

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mohaghegh, Sina (Author) ; Rafie, Majid (Supervisor) ; Khalou, Alireza (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the features of a project is its uniqueness, if two sets of activities are the same neither of them will longer be included in the project definition. A method in two projects with the same nature may yield inverse results of each other. Therefore, it is necessary to study the parameters affecting the project carefully before any action. So far, some research has been conducted in this area and it has been tried to perform case study on qualitative and quantitative parameters of the project. By investigating a number of common factors in most civil engineering projects, especially megaprojects, the present study attempts to identify and examine exquisite and effective parameters and...

A Knowledge Oriented Framework to Enable New Service Development Using Axiomatic Design Theory: Focusing on Hotel Business Models

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hasanpour Esfahlan, Elnaz (Author) ; Fattahi Valilai, Omid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this research, the concept of new service development for Hotel industry is considered. As the concept of new service development encounters both business model structures and the required analysis for validation, the thesis has used the axiomatic design theory to evaluate the required service elements. Axiomatic Design framework as a scientific base for every type of design consists of 4 domains. The first domain named customer domain is the starting point at this research. In order to be prepared for applying in a real case study, customer domain is investigated and analyzed through a business model Canvas with nine building blocks covering all necessary and effective domains in a...

A Model for the Selection and Prioritization of Project Portfolio in the Project-Based Organizations

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sharifi, Atefe (Author) ; Hajji, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
During recent years a variety of decision making models for project selecting and priorities have been developed. Most of these models used quantitative indicators for projects evaluating and focused on financial and economic indicators. In this project, a decision support system for project portfolio management in construction industry has been developed. The most important feature of this model that distinct it from others is its relationship with the organization's strategies. On one hand, this model focuses on the organization to ensuring that the projects selected for investment, meet the portfolio strategy and on the other hand, it focuses on project management to delivering projects...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Kamaei, Amin (Author) ; Shadrokh, Shahram (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Risk is an uncertain event or condition that, if it occurs, has a positive or negative effect on a project’s objectives. Identification and assessment of risk in a measurable way are so important for project managers to decide better. This thesis studies how to identify and assess the project’s risks in Fishery industry based on the Project management body of knowledge (PMBOK 2008) as a global standard. Constructing an aquaculture site in Abadan city has some risks which are identified in the first steps of the study and in the following steps these risks will be prioritized by the use of qualitative analysis and figured out which risks have major effects on projects objectives. In last step...

Design of a HEV’s Controller Using Learning-based Methods

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zare, Aramchehr (Author) ; Boroushaki, Mehrdad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) are proving to be one of the most promising innovations in advanced transportation systems to reduce air pollution and fossil fuel consumption. EMS is one of the most vital aspects of the HEV powertrain system. This research aims to design an optimal EMS under the condition of meeting the goals of drivability control, fuel consumption reduction, and battery charge stability. The current EMS is based on the classical rule-based method derived from fuzzy logic, which guides to the suboptimal solution in episodic driving cycles. Previous experiences in implementing Reinforcement Learning (RL) suffer from late convergence, instability in tracking the driving...

Model for Planning Flow of Knowledge to Optimize Energy and the Environment

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Motamedinezhad, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Saboohi, Yadollah (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate and analyse the technological transition of a new clean energy technology in the market. The agent-based modeling is used in national innovation chain to describe knowledge spillover between main actors in innovation procedure in order to attain renewable energy technology (RET) from basic research to commercial stage. Government’s expenditure on training human resource and R&D activities is modeled as a tool to analyse the development of innovation chain in order to increase diffusion rate of the new technology. Application of the knowledge flow model is demonstrated through analysis of introduction of solar PV in the energy system of Iran and...

The results show that 1) the accumulation of capabilities from low levels to advance is based on product diversity and the knowledge inputs, which was first through "using, doing and interacting" has changed to "science, technology...

Relationship Between Feedback-Seeking Motives and Dimensions and Individual Performance in an Iranian Knowledge-Based Organization

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Rabbani, Mohammad Mahdi (Author) ; Alavi, Babak (Supervisor) ; Miremadi, Iman (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The present study investigates the relationships between feedback-seeking dimensions (frequency, method, timing, and content) and two types of individual performance (goal achievement and behavior-related performance). In addition, the relationships between feedback-seeking motives and feedback-seeking dimensions are examined. The purpose is to identify new explanations for the inconclusive results of the direct relationship between feedback-seeking and performance in the literature. Moreover, this study investigates work motivations based on self-determination theory as the antecedents of feedback-seeking motives. This study contains one qualitative phase and two quantitative ones....

Developing a New Approach for Investigating Relationship of Knowledge Structuration, Technology, and Financial Performance of the Firm

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Esfandyarpour, Ali (Author) ; Arasti, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor) ; Miremadi, Iman (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Knowledge flows across organizational boundaries shape a firm’s knowledge base. Knowledge structuration refers to the two structural dimensions of a firm's knowledge base: Breadth (knowledge across technology domains) and depth (knowledge within technology domains). Despite the conceptual difference between the terms “(technological) knowledge” and “technology”, the two are often used interchangeably in empirical research on technology management. Our paper adopts an innovative approach, taking advantage of Machine Learning and clinical studies conducted by biopharma companies, to offer an empirical way of distinguishing between knowledge and technology. Moreover, we restructure the...
