    An asymmetric checkpointing and rollback error recovery scheme for embedded processors

    Abstract
    This paper presents a checkpointing scheme for rollback error recovery, called Asymmetric Checkpointing and Rollback Recovery (ACRR) which stores the processor states in an asymmetric manner. In this way, error recovery latency and the number of checkpoints are reduced to increase the probability of timely task completion for soft real-time applications. To evaluate the ACRR, this scheme was studied analytically. The analytical results show that the recovery latency is reduced as non-uniformity of the checkpoint increases.     Abstract
    In this study, we applied the homotopy perturbation (HP) method for solving linear and nonlinear fourth-order boundary value problems. The analytical results of the boundary value problems have been obtained in terms of a convergent series with easily computable components. Comparisons between the results of the HP method and the analytical solution showed that this method gives very precise results with a few terms. In the implied HP method, some unknown parameters in the initial guess are introduced, which are identified after applying boundary conditions.     Abstract
    A single storey full-scale unreinforced brick masonry building with confined walls was designed based on Iranian building code and constructed on the shaking table facility of EERC of Sharif University of Technology. The model consisted of plain brick masonry walls confined with concrete tie columns and steel bond beams and had a typical jack-arch roof system.     Abstract
    This letter discusses the surface-reconstruction-induced self-twisting behavior of Si100 nanobelts and nanowires (NWs) with rectangular cross section. Giving a thorough physical interpretation, we explain the reason behind this phenomenon and present a continuum-based model. It is revealed that these structures can self-assemble into both right- and left-handed helicoids depending on their crystal arrangements. More specifically, for NWs with the same number of layers in each of their cross sections directions, two distinct values of torsion angle are possible for each of right- and left-handed twisted morphologies. In conclusion, four modes of torsion can be observed in Si100 NWs....

    Previous studies of analysis and prediction of marine risers responses usually focus on vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of cross-flow (CF) direction rather than in-line (IL). Recent studies show that responses of IL direction tend to dominate in some cases. Responses of long riser due to biaxial bending of IL and CF VIV are investigated. Closed-form formulas are derived for estimating maximum normal stress due to the biaxial moment of CF/IL VIV and relations for estimating biaxial stress using CF values are presented.     In this paper, we propose utilizing multiple optical phase conjugate (OPC) modules along fiber spans, in order to improve the performance of coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) communication systems in long-haul fiber-optic channels. The role of OPC in CO-OFDM systems is investigated by formulating the four-wave mixing (FWM) process generated along a CO-OFDM with two and three OPCs. Analytical results reveal that increasing the number of OPC modules reduces the average FWM power along the transmission link and as a result mitigates the degrading effect of interaction between amplified spontaneous emission noise and FWM.     The objective of this paper is to present some novel insights for solving a second stage creep problem in metal matrix composites. First, a new analytical approach is developed for obtaining some unknowns in second stage creep of short fiber composites under an applied axial load.     Abstract
    A general model for superconducting synchronous machines in which the rotor can be considered as a magnetic or a nonmagnetic material is proposed and analytically investigated. Analytical equations for magnetic flux in different regions of the machine have been developed. Furthermore, nonlinear magnetization of the iron core is studied. In order to solve the equations in the case of the iron saturation, a reiterative algorithm is proposed. Finite-element simulation has also been performed to verify the equations and the proposed algorithm. The obtained analytical results show good agreement with finite-element method results

    In this paper, numerical and analytical approaches are presented to evaluate the effect of catalyst loading gradient in the catalyst layer (CL) of a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell. The model is developed based on agglomerate catalyst and accounts for reactant spices and charge (ion and electron) transport in the cathode side of a PEM fuel cell. The special variation of catalyst loading is considered in two direction, "across the layer" from membrane/CL interface to gas diffusion layer (GDL) and "in catalyst plane" under the channels and land areas in the channel direction.     In this paper, we focus on a cognitive network scenario, comprised of a WLAN overlaid on a network with time-scheduled primary users. WiMAX is an example of such primary networks.     To determine the curvature of the exit profile in the extrusion process of non-symmetrical flat dies, the dead metal zone profile was predicted using the energy minimization method. The dead zone is a natural non-linear die for the process and it is pragmatic to use this non-linear die to estimate the value of the exit profile curvature and the required bearing length for reducing this deviation.     In this paper, static behavior of nano/microm1irrors under Casimir force is studied. At the first, the equilibrium equation governing the statical behavior of nano/micromirrors is obtained. Then energy method is employed to investigate statical stability of nano/micromirrors equilibrium points and a useful equation is suggested for successful and stable design of nano/micromirrors under Casimir force.     In this paper, the static behavior of micromirrors under the effect of capillary forces is studied. First the equation governing the static behavior of micromirrors is obtained using both Newton method and minimum potential energy principle.     The main objective of this paper is to investigate the stability and stabilization problem of fuzzy large-scale systems in which the system is composed of a number of Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy subsystems with interconnection. Instead of fuzzy parallel distributed compensation (PDC) design, nonlinear state feedback controllers are used in stabilization of the overall large-scale system. Based on Lyapunov stability theory, linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) conditions are derived for asymptotic and exponential stability.     In this paper, a confined infill panel previously experimented under out-of-plane loading is modeled and analyzed by the dynamic explicit method (DEM). This method is shown to have a good estimation of the experimental results, and is thus adopted to investigate the out-of-plane behavior of an infill model. Based on the analytical results, the stress distribution of an infill panel prior to and after cracking, and the effect of an arching mechanism on post-cracking behavior, is studied.
