    Abstract
Background: Drowning is a leading cause of injury-related mortality globally. Unintentional drowning (International Classification of Diseases (ICD) 10 codes W65-74 and ICD9 E910) is one of the 30 mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive causes of injury-related mortality in the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study. This study's objective is to describe unintentional drowning using GBD estimates from 1990 to 2017. Methods: Unintentional drowning from GBD 2017 was estimated for cause-specific mortality and years of life lost (YLLs), age, sex, country, region, Socio-demographic Index (SDI) quintile, and trends from 1990 to 2017. GBD 2017 used standard GBD methods for estimating mortality...

    Abstract
In recent years, both tissue engineering and microfluidics have significantly contributed in engineering of in vitro skin substitutes to test the penetration of chemicals or to replace damaged skins. Organ-on-chip platforms have been recently inspired by the integration of microfluidics and biomaterials in order to develop physiologically relevant disease models. However, the application of organ-on-chip on the development of skin disease models is still limited and needs to be further developed. The impact of tissue engineering, biomaterials and microfluidic platforms on the development of skin grafts and biomimetic in vitro skin models is reviewed. The integration of tissue engineering and...

    Abstract
Background: As global rates of mortality decrease, rates of non-fatal injury have increased, particularly in low Socio-demographic Index (SDI) nations. We hypothesised this global pattern of non-fatal injury would be demonstrated in regard to bony hand and wrist trauma over the 27-year study period. Methods: The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2017 was used to estimate prevalence, age-standardised incidence and years lived with disability for hand trauma in 195 countries from 1990 to 2017. Individual injuries included hand and wrist fractures, thumb amputations and non-thumb digit amputations. Results: The global incidence of hand trauma has only modestly...

    Abstract
It is well understood that patients with different diseases may have a variety of specific proteins (e.g., type, amount, and configuration) in their plasmas. When nanoparticles (NPs) are exposed to these plasmas, the resulting coronas may incorporate some of the disease-specific proteins. Using gold (Au) NPs with different surface properties and corona composition, we have developed a technology for the discrimination and detection of two neurodegenerative diseases, Alzheimer's disease (AD) and multiple sclerosis (MS). Applying a variety of techniques, including UV-visible spectra, colorimetric response analyses and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, we found the corona-NP...

    Abstract
Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), which is classified into Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, are among chronic gastrointestinal diseases with unknown pathogenesis. Diverse strategies have been applied for the treatment of this chronic disease. However, selective and site-specific routes of drug delivery to the inflamed location of the colon remain of high importance. Consequently, the application and effects of natural products in the form of nanoformulation and stimuli responsive nanoparticles as a novel strategy for the treatment of IBD are discussed in this review article. This approach may potentially overcome some complications that are associated with conventional means of colon...

Global analysis of an SAIS model

    , Article Journal of Biological Dynamics ; Volume 6, Issue 2 , 2012 , Pages 457-474 ; 17513758 (ISSN) Razvan, M. R ; Yasaman, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
This paper is concerned with global analysis of an SAIS epidemiological model in a population of varying size introduced by Busenberg and van den Driessche. In this model the population is divided into three subgroups of susceptible, asymptomatic and infective individuals. It has been shown that this system has no periodic solutions and all its trajectories tend to the equilibria of the system. We use the Poincaré Index theorem to determine the number of the equilibria and their stability properties. We have shown that bistability occurs for suitable values of parameters and found a set of examples of all possible dynamics of the system

A Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship Study on Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Drugs

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Torkashvand, Rezvan (Author) ; Jalali-Heravi, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the present work we report a quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) study on S1P1 receptor’s agonists that have therapeutic potential for autoimmune disorders such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Such studies play an important role in drug design and lead optimization by developing a mathematical relationship between the chemical structures of compounds and their biological activities.
We used both linear and nonlinear techniques such as MLR and ANN respectively to model these compounds together with techniques such as Stepwise-MLR, GA-MLR and GA-ANN in the variable selection step as it is an important step in every QSAR study. Since topological descriptors are well...

Interplay between competitive and cooperative interactions in a three-player pathogen system

    , Article Royal Society Open Science ; Volume 7, Issue 1 , 2020 Pinotti, F ; Ghanbarnejad, F ; Hövel, P ; Poletto, C ; Sharif University of Technology
    Royal Society Publishing  2020
    Abstract
In ecological systems, heterogeneous interactions between pathogens take place simultaneously. This occurs, for instance, when two pathogens cooperate, while at the same time, multiple strains of these pathogens co-circulate and compete. Notable examples include the cooperation of human immunodeficiency virus with antibiotic-resistant and susceptible strains of tuberculosis or some respiratory infections with Streptococcus pneumoniae strains. Models focusing on competition or cooperation separately fail to describe how these concurrent interactions shape the epidemiology of such diseases. We studied this problem considering two cooperating pathogens, where one pathogen is further structured...

Markovian approach to tackle the interaction of simultaneous diseases

    , Article Physical Review E ; Volume 100, Issue 6 , 2019 ; 24700045 (ISSN) Soriano Panos, D ; Ghanbarnejad, F ; Meloni, S ; Gomez Gardenes, J ; Sharif University of Technology
    American Physical Society  2019
    Abstract
The simultaneous emergence of several abrupt disease outbreaks or the extinction of some serotypes of multistrain diseases are fingerprints of the interaction between pathogens spreading within the same population. Here, we propose a general and versatile benchmark to address the unfolding of both cooperative and competitive interacting diseases. We characterize the explosive transitions between the disease-free and the epidemic regimes arising from the cooperation between pathogens and show the critical degree of cooperation needed for the onset of such abrupt transitions. For the competing diseases, we characterize the mutually exclusive case and derive analytically the transition point...

Regeneration of stochastic processes: An inverse method

    , Article European Physical Journal B ; Volume 47, Issue 3 , 2005 , Pages 411-415 ; 14346028 (ISSN) Ghasemi, F ; Peinke, J ; Sahimi, M ; Rahimi Tabar, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
We propose a novel inverse method that utilizes a set of data to construct a simple equation that governs the stochastic process for which the data have been measured, hence enabling us to reconstruct the stochastic process. As an example, we analyze the stochasticity in the beat-to-beat fluctuations in the heart rates of healthy subjects as well as those with congestive heart failure. The inverse method provides a novel technique for distinguishing the two classes of subjects in terms of a drift and a diffusion coefficients which behave completely differently for the two classes of subjects, hence potentially providing a novel diagnostic tool for distinguishing healthy subjects from those...

The other goal was to suggest efficient COVID-19 forecasting tools and to examine the association of intercity travel patterns and COVID-19 trends in Iran. To this end, weekly confirmed cases and...

    Market of Kidney in Iran

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Didgar, Dadmehr (Author) ; Fatemi Ardestani, Farshad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this study we developed an analytical model to delve into the behavior of participants in the market of kidney in Iran. We get health as a good which not only elevates the utility of any individual, it add more years to each individual longevity. We find out that ESRD patients who are in serious need of receiving a new kidney will never postpone buying kidney in case of having the price fixed in all periods. We found out that the waiting time in queue of receiving market is a u-shape function in which there is a minimum. We proved that the price making the queue minimum is definitely bigger than the market clearance market. Accordingly, despite all the unfair and immoral view toward...

Development of An Intelligent System For Thyroid Disease Diagnosis , Modeling And Simulation of Thyroid Hormone In Human Body

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Orouskhani, Erfan (Author) ; Bozorgmehri, Ramin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The abstract is the most important section of the thesis because many readers limit most of their reading to abstracts, saving in-depth reading for specific theses. It should give the reader a "preview" of what's to come. The abstract should emphasize new and important aspects of the study or observations. The purpose of the abstract is to allow researchers to decide whether or not to read the whole thesis. The abstract is what researchers read first to decide if the thesis is important, interesting, and it allows them to assess the relevance of a thesis to their own research, without having to read the entire thesis. Thus, it is crucial that the abstract both summarize succinctly the key...
