, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Oveisi, Mohammad Hossein (Author) ; Hashemi, Matin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death globally so early diagnosis of them is important. Many researchers focused on this field. First signs of cardiac diseases appear in the electrocardiogram signal. This signal represents the electrical activity of the heart so it’s primarily used for the detection and classification of cardiac arrhythmias. Permanent monitoring of this signal is not possible for specialists so we should do this by means of Artificial Intelligence. In this thesis, we use recurrent neural networks to classify electrocardiogram’s arrhythmias. This deep learning method, use two sources of data to learn from. The first part of data is global for everyone and the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Abdi, Romina (Author) ; Mashayekhan, Shohreh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The retina, a photosensitive area in the central nervous system, is delicate and intricate. It is susceptible to degenerative disorders such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), retinitis pigmentosa (RP), Stargardt disease (SD), and glaucoma. These diseases can lead to severe vision loss and ultimately irreversible blindness by causing destruction or dysfunction of different types of retinal cells. Unfortunately, there are no proven treatment strategies to cure or reverse these degenerative disorders. However, cell transplantation therapies may be an alternative to replace distorted cells and improve an individual's vision. Recent clinical outcomes show that transplanted cells in the...

Design, Analysis, and Experimental Study of a Slave Robot for Minimally Invasive Beating Heart Surgery

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Alamdar, Alireza (Author) ; Farahmand, Farzam (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this study, a practical approach for robotic beating heart surgery was proposed. This approach eliminates lateral movements of the heart and compensates for normal heart movement by using 1 DOF heart stabilizer and 1 DOF heart compensator simultaneously. It is a compromise between complete fixation of the heart, which damages the heart tissue, on one hand and complex and impractical compensation of the free heart movement on the other. One of the core components of the proposed system is the slave robot, which includes a 1 DOF compensator and a 4 DOF tool holder robot. Based on the selected laparoscopic tool, a modified agile-eye mechanism for activating the wrist was introduced,...

Disease Classification Based on Graph Learning using fMRI Datasets

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Arasteh, Ali (Author) ; Amini, Arash (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the past few years, the available knowledge in graph-based processing has made significant progress, and as a result, powerful tools have been created. In this regard, graph learning with the assumption of data smoothness on the final result can be considered a successful example. Briefly, in graph learning, to describe the relationship between the problem components, a graph is learned using the available data whose nodes represent the problem components, and its edges represent how much these components are connected. The usefulness of this method lies in the possibility of using the obtained graph as the input to currently known methods of classification and achieving better results...

    Epidemiology and Networks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ashrafi Amineh, Rasa (Author) ; Haji Sadeghi, Mir Omid (Supervisor) ; Razvan, Mahammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Networks and the epidemiology of directly transmitted infectious diseases are fun-damentally linked. The foundations of epidemiology and early epidemiological models were based on population wide random-mixing, but in practice each individual has a finite set of contacts to whom they can pass infection; the ensemble of all such contacts forms a network. Knowledge of the structure of the network allows models to compute the epidemic dynamics at the population scale from the individual-level behaviour of infections.Motivated by the analysis of social networks, we study a model of random net-works that has both a given degree distribution and a tunable clustering coefficient. We consider two...

Identifying Cancer-related Genes Via Network Feature Learning and Multi-Omics Data Integration

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Safari, Monireh (Author) ; Rabiee, Hamid Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The highly developed biological data collection methods enable scientists to capture protein-protein interaction (PPI) in the human body, which could be analyzed as biological networks such as protein-protein interaction networks. These networks reveal essential information about the biological process in human cells and can be used to identify genes associated with cancers. Effectively identifying disease-related genes would contribute to improving the treatment and diagnosis of various diseases. Current methods for identifying disease-related genes mainly focus on the hypothesis of guilt-by-association and do not consider the global information in the PPI network. Besides, most methods pay...

Recent studies of brain activities indicate that Phase-Amplitude Coupling (PAC) between several regions of the brain, are meaningfully related to Parkinson’s Disease. In this research, we have studied PAC as a statistical measure in Parkinsonian patients’ brains while Deep Brain Stimulation treatment with different stimulation frequencies are being applied. In order to do so, we have investigated patients’ brain signals, and estimated PAC between regions of interest; afterwards, by using the estimated PAC values, we have found significant effects of the treatments on parkinsonian brains; furthermore, two treatments that are using 130 Hz and 340 Hz stimuli signals are compared. In this...

Simulation of Competitive Flow in the Coronary Arteries Bypass

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Azimi Nejad, Milad (Author) ; Firoozabadi, Bahar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Atherosclerosis is one of the most important factors for mortality and morbidity in the world. Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) is applied for treatment of this disease which in this surgery, the patient vessels, such as internal thoracic artery and saphenous vein, are harvested and grafted to the coronary arteries. The graft success and its performance in short and long-term are depended on the much factors e.g. the severity of stenosis in the coronary artery. It should be noted that the low level of stenosis in the coronary artery causes the creation of undesirable phenomenon of competitive flow in the grafts after the surgery which this phenomenon has been reported as a cause of graft...

Numerical Study of SARS-CoV-2 Virus Dispersion in Hospital Wards

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ahmadian, Hossein (Author) ; Abdekhodaie, Mohammad Jafar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has driven our attention to a simulation of virus dispersion to complete our understanding of airborne transmission. A myriad of studies have shown that respiratory diseases such as MERS, SARS, and COVID-19 can be transmitted by virus-laden droplets released during coughs, sneezing, and normal breathing. To mitigate and prevent the spread of such infectious diseases, investigation of the transmission routes is of great importance. This study has been fueled to harness the CFD tool to simulate the virus-laden droplets dispersion in hospitals inwards. Because of the limitations intertwined with experimental works such as the risk of infection of experimenters, and...
