Centrality-based epidemic control in complex social networks

    , Article Social Network Analysis and Mining ; Volume 10, Issue 1 , 2020 Doostmohammadian, M ; Rabiee, H. R ; Khan, U. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer  2020
    Abstract
Recent progress in the areas of network science and control has shown a significant promise in understanding and analyzing epidemic processes. A well-known model to study epidemics processes used by both control and epidemiological research communities is the susceptible–infected–susceptible (SIS) dynamics to model the spread of disease/viruses over contact networks of infected and susceptible individuals. The SIS model has two metastable equilibria: one is called the endemic equilibrium and the other is known as the disease-free or healthy-state equilibrium. Control theory provides the tools to design control actions (allocating curing or vaccination resources) in order to achieve and...

CaZnO-based nanoghosts for the detection of ssDNA, pCRISPR and recombinant SARS-CoV-2 spike antigen and targeted delivery of doxorubicin

    Abstract
Overexpression of proteins/antigens and other gene-related sequences in the bodies could lead to significant mutations and refractory diseases. Detection and identification of assorted trace concentrations of such proteins/antigens and/or gene-related sequences remain challenging, affecting different pathogens and making viruses stronger. Correspondingly, coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) mutations/alterations and spread could lead to overexpression of ssDNA and the related antigens in the population and brisk activity in gene-editing technologies in the treatment/detection may lead to the presence of pCRISPR in the blood. Therefore, the detection and evaluation of their trace concentrations are of...

Carbon-paste electrode modified with cobalt-5-nitrolsalophen as a sensitive voltammetric sensor for detection of captopril

    , Article Sensors and Actuators, B: Chemical ; Volume 109, Issue 2 , 2005 , Pages 278-284 ; 09254005 (ISSN) Shahrokhian, S ; Karimi, M ; Khajehsharifi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
The electrochemical behavior of captopril at the surface of a carbon-paste electrode (CPE) modified with cobalt-5-nitrolsalophen (CoNSal) is described. The prepared electrode shows an excellent electrocatalytic activity toward the oxidation of captopril, which is leading to marked lowering in the anodic overpotential and considerable improvement of sensitivity (anodic current). Whereas at the surface of unmodified electrode an electrochemical activity for captopril cannot be observed, a very sharp anodic wave with an anodic peak potential about 650 mV (versus Ag/AgCl) is obtained using the prepared modified electrode. This catalytic wave is assigned to mediating of Co(III)/Co(II) redox...

    Abstract
Recent advances in biomaterials, microfabrication, microfluidics, and cell biology have led to the development of organ-on-a-chip devices that can reproduce key functions of various organs. Such platforms promise to provide novel insights into various physiological events, including mechanisms of disease, and evaluate the effects of external interventions, such as drug administration. The neuroscience field is expected to benefit greatly from these innovative tools. Conventional ex vivo studies of the nervous system have been limited by the inability of cell culture to adequately mimic in vivo physiology. While animal models can be used, their relevance to human physiology is uncertain and...

Bioengineering approaches for corneal regenerative medicine

    Abstract
Background:: Since the cornea is responsible for transmitting and focusing light into the eye, injury or pathology affecting any layer of the cornea can cause a detrimental effect on visual acuity. Aging is also a reason for corneal degeneration. Depending on the level of the injury, conservative therapies and donor tissue transplantation are the most common treatments for corneal diseases. Not only is there a lack of donor tissue and risk of infection/rejection, but the inherent ability of corneal cells and layers to regenerate has led to research in regenerative approaches and treatments. Methods:: In this review, we first discussed the anatomy of the cornea and the required properties for...

    Abstract
Fast, efficient, and accurate detection of SARS-CoV-2 spike antigen is pivotal to control the spread and reduce the mortality of COVID-19. Nevertheless, the sensitivity of available nanobiosensors to detect recombinant SARS-CoV-2 spike antigen seems insufficient. As a proof-of-concept, MOF-5/CoNi2S4 is developed as a low-cost, safe, and bioactive hybrid nanostructure via the one-pot high-gravity protocol. Then, the porphyrin, H2TMP, was attached to the surface of the synthesized nanomaterial to increase the porosity for efficient detection of recombinant SARS-CoV-2 spike antigen. AFM results approved roughness in different ranges, including 0.54 to 0.74 μm and 0.78 to ≈0.80 μm, showing good...

    Abstract
Slow-gamma (35-45 Hz) phase synchronization and the coupling between slow-gamma and low-frequency theta oscillations (4–8 Hz) are closely related to memory retrieval and cognitive functions. In this pilot study, we assess the Phase Amplitude Coupling (PAC) between theta and slow-gamma oscillatory bands and the quality of synchronization in slow-gamma oscillations using Phase Locking Value (PLV) on EEG data from healthy individuals and patients diagnosed with amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment (aMCI) and Alzheimer's Disease (AD) during an oddball olfactory task. Our study indicates noticeable differences between the PLV and PAC values corresponding to olfactory stimulation in the three groups...

A Wavelet-packet-based approach for breast cancer classification

, Article Proceedings of the Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, EMBS ; 2011 , Pages 5100-5103 ; 1557170X (ISSN) ; 9781424441211 (ISBN) Torabi, M ; Razavian, S. M. J ; Vaziri, R ; Vosoughi Vahdat, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, a new approach for non-invasive diagnosis of breast diseases is tested on the region of the breast without undue influence from the background and medically unnecessary parts of the images. We applied Wavelet packet analysis on the two-dimensional histogram matrices of a large number of breast images to generate the filter banks, namely sub-images. Each of 1250 resulting sub-images are used for computation of 32 two-dimensional histogram matrices. Then informative statistical features (e.g. skewness and kurtosis) are extracted from each matrix. The independent features, using 5-fold cross-validation protocol, are considered as the input sets of supervised classification. We...

A validated reduced-order dynamic model of nitric oxide regulation in coronary arteries

    , Article Computers in Biology and Medicine ; Volume 139 , 2021 ; 00104825 (ISSN) Moshfegh, H ; Tajeddini, F ; Pakravan, H. A ; Mahzoon, M ; Azadi Yazdi, E ; Bazrafshan Drissi, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Nitric Oxide (NO) provides myocardial oxygen demands of the heart during exercise and cardiac pacing and also prevents cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis and platelet adhesion and aggregation. However, the direct in vivo measurement of NO in coronary arteries is still challenging. To address this matter, a mathematical model of dynamic changes of calcium and NO concentration in the coronary artery was developed for the first time. The model is able to simulate the effect of NO release in coronary arteries and its impact on the hemodynamics of the coronary arterial tree and also to investigate the vasodilation effects of arteries during cardiac pacing. For these purposes, flow...

Automatic skin cancer (melanoma) detection by processing dermatoscopic images

    , Article 1st International Conference on Machine Vision and Image Processing, MVIP 2020, 19 February 2020 through 20 February 2020 ; Volume 2020-February , 2020 Moazen, H ; Jamzad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    IEEE Computer Society  2020
    Abstract
Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer if not treated early. The best way to cure melanoma is to treat it in its earliest stage of development. Since melanoma is similar to benign moles in its shape and appearance, it is often mistaken for moles and left untreated. Automatic melanoma detection is an essential way to increase the survival rate of patients by detecting melanoma in its early stages. In this paper, a new method for automatic diagnosis of melanoma using segmented dermatoscopic images is provided. Almost all related methods follow similar approaches but using different features. We have introduced several new features which could improve the accuracy of diagnosing melanoma....

    , Article Cardiovascular Engineering and Technology ; Volume 10, Issue 3 , 2019 , Pages 490-499 ; 1869408X (ISSN) Mohammadi, S ; Mohammadi, M ; Dehlaghi, V ; Ahmadi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer New York LLC  2019
    Abstract
Purpose: An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is known as a cardiovascular disease involving localized deformation (swelling or enlargement) of aorta occurring between the renal and iliac arteries. AAA would jeopardize patients’ lives due to its rupturing risk, so prompt recognition and diagnosis of this disorder is vital. Although computed tomography angiography (CTA) is the preferred imaging modality used by radiologist for diagnosing AAA, computed tomography (CT) images can be used too. In the recent decade, there has been several methods suggested by experts in order to find a precise automated way to diagnose AAA without human intervention base on CT and CTA images. Despite great...

A unified approach for detection of induced epileptic seizures in rats using ECoG signals

    , Article Epilepsy and Behavior ; Volume 27, Issue 2 , 2013 , Pages 355-364 ; 15255050 (ISSN) Niknazar, M ; Mousavi, S. R ; Motaghi, S ; Dehghani, A ; Vosoughi Vahdat, B ; Shamsollahi, M. B ; Sayyah, M ; Noorbakhsh, S. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
Objective: Epileptic seizure detection is a key step for epilepsy assessment. In this work, using the pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) model, seizures were induced in rats, and ECoG signals in interictal, preictal, ictal, and postictal periods were recorded. The recorded ECoG signals were then analyzed to detect epileptic seizures in the epileptic rats. Methods: Two different approaches were considered in this work: thresholding and classification. In the thresholding approach, a feature is calculated in consecutive windows, and the resulted index is tracked over time and compared with a threshold. The moment the index crosses the threshold is considered as the moment of seizure onset. In the...

    Abstract
This paper illustrates the use of a combined neural network model for classification of electrocardiogram (ECG) beats. We present a trainable neural network ensemble approach to develop customized electrocardiogram beat classifier in an effort to further improve the performance of ECG processing and to offer individualized health care. We process a three stage technique for detection of premature ventricular contraction (PVC) from normal beats and other heart diseases. This method includes a denoising, a feature extraction and a classification. At first we investigate the application of stationary wavelet transform (SWT) for noise reduction of the electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. Then...

    Abstract
This study presents a novel statistical volume element (SVE) for micromechanical modeling of the white matter structures, with histology-informed randomized distribution of axonal tracts within the extracellular matrix. The model was constructed based on the probability distribution functions obtained from the results of diffusion tensor imaging as well as the histological observations of scanning electron micrograph, at two structures of white matter susceptible to traumatic brain injury, i.e. corpus callosum and corona radiata. A simplistic representative volume element (RVE) with symmetrical arrangement of fully alligned axonal fibers was also created as a reference for comparison. A...

Atheroprone sites of coronary artery bifurcation: Effect of heart motion on hemodynamics-dependent monocytes deposition

    , Article Computers in Biology and Medicine ; Volume 133 , 2021 ; 00104825 (ISSN) Biglarian, M ; Firoozabadi, B ; Saidi, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2021
    Abstract
Atherosclerosis as a common cardiovascular disease is a result of both adverse hemodynamics conditions and monocyte deposition within coronary arteries. It is known that the adhesion of monocytes on the arterial wall and their interaction with the vascular surface are one of the main parameters in the initiation and progression of atherosclerosis. In this work, hemodynamic parameters and monocyte deposition have been investigated in a 3D computational model of the Left Anterior Descending coronary artery (LAD) and its first diagonal branch (D1) under the heart motion. A one-way Lagrangian approach is performed to trace the monocyte particles under different blood flow regimes and heart motion...

    Abstract
Breast cancer is considered as the most important cause of death among women. Architectural distortions are very important signs of breast cancer and early detection of them is a rewarding work. In this paper we propose a method to recognize architectural distortion from normal parenchyma. In our proposed method, appropriate features are extracted by the analysis of oriented textures with the application of orientation component of recent the state-of-the-art local texture descriptor called Monogenic Binary Coding (MBC). In addition, we transform Region of Interests (ROIs) to polar coordinates in order to highlight some specific patterns in mammograms. Various classifiers are used over a set...

    Abstract
Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), which is classified into Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, are among chronic gastrointestinal diseases with unknown pathogenesis. Diverse strategies have been applied for the treatment of this chronic disease. However, selective and site-specific routes of drug delivery to the inflamed location of the colon remain of high importance. Consequently, the application and effects of natural products in the form of nanoformulation and stimuli responsive nanoparticles as a novel strategy for the treatment of IBD are discussed in this review article. This approach may potentially overcome some complications that are associated with conventional means of colon...
