, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Dorostkar Ghamsari, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, Mahmud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this dissertation, the value of distribution network reconfiguration in presence of distributed generation is investigated. In the first step, a mathematical optimization model is devised to minimize daily network losses via applying hourly reconfigurations. The results show that the hourly reconfiguration reduces the losses. Then, sensitivity analyses on the renewable penetration, wind and load correlation, switching cost and wind power prediction are conducted and discussed. The switching cost analysis revealed that a great amount of loss reduction could be attained with a small number of switching operations. The worthiness of reconfiguration becomes more in systems with high...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jamshidi, Mohammad Hossein (Author) ; Parniani, Mustafa (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the near future, it is expected that the microgrids become widespreed due to issues such as reliability, increased penetration of renewable energy sources and distributed generation, environmental concerns and shortage of fossil fuels. Different control methods have been suggested to regulate the frequency and voltage of the system so that these quantities remain in their permissible range upon islanding and in the islanded operation mode. However, in emergency conditions, such as shortage of generated power compared to the load of microgrid, frequency or voltage reduction occures due to imbalance. In this situation, it is invitable to shed extra load to maintain the stability and...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Mahdian Dehkordi, Nima (Author) ; Sadati, Naser (Supervisor) ; Hamzeh, Mohsen (Supervisor)
    Abstract
New nonlinear voltage and current control strategies based on backstepping control and a high-order sliding mode differentiator for microgrid are proposed. The microgrid consists of multiple distributed generation (DG) units with an arbitrary configuration that can be parametrically uncertain or topologically unknown. The proposed method robustly regulates the microgrid voltages and currents in the presence of parametric uncertainties, unmodeled dynamics, load imbalances, and nonlinear loads with harmonic/interharmonic currents. In contrast to existing methods, the proposed method does not need to know the frequency of harmonic and interharmonic current of microgrid loads that lead to the...

Integrated Control and Power Sharing of Distributed Generators in Islanded and Grid-Connected Microgrids

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nokhbehzaeem, Javad (Author) ; Parniani, Mostafa (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Distributed generation (DG) technologies have achieved an intense progress during the last years. One of the appropriate ways to enter a DG system in the electrical network is through the use of microgrids. Because the majority of DG units are connected to the grid with power electronic converters, specific control strategies have been developed for these converters. Control strategies of DGs in microgrid differ in the grid-connected and the islanded states of operation. Changing the control modes from one state to another requires a reliable islanding detection method, and results in unwanted transients. It is, therefore, desirable to devise an integrated control approach for both states....

Improvement of Control of Hybrid AC-DC Microgrid in Islanded Mode

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Khorsandi, Amir (Author) ; Mokhtari, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
A microgrid is a collection of loads, sources, and power storage units that operates as a single controllable system and can operate in grid-connected or islanded mode. From the generating side, renewable energy resources such as photovoltaic system, fuel cell and power storage units are inherently DC. From the load side, electronic loads such as computers, data centers and most of the variable speed motor drives require a DC supply. Therefore, DC Microgrids have gained widespread attention in recent years. On the other hand, since existing distribution systems are mostly AC, a hybrid microgrid is more likely. The hybrid microgrid is composed of two AC and DC subgrids interlinked by power...

Power Flow Control and Power Quality Enhancement in Grid-Connected Microgrid with Back-to-Back Converter

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sekhavatmanesh, Hossein (Author) ; Mokhtari, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
A microgrid system consists of some distributed generators (DGs) and local loads which can operate in both grid-connected and islanded modes of operation. An islanded mode of operation is required when the grid voltage deteriorates and its power quality drops. This islanding operation can be attained by opening grid-side switches or by using back-to-back (b-to-b) converters. Due to the increase of highly sensitive loads and to have better power control and higher power quality, the use of back-to-back converters has recently attracted interests among researchers. However, the major drawback of this solution is the cost of a b-to-b converter. Therefore the aim of this project is to gain some...

Optimal Distributed Generation Allocation Considering Power Qaulity Indices

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Golzari, Hamid (Author) ; Mokhtari, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The demand for independent power generation has been increased in recent years due to the growing demand in distributed networks, losses and power qaulity in power systems. These losses occur in transmission to distribution networks from the generation sites to the end-user loads which have harmonic losses besides fundamental losses.. The non-linear load makes the harmonics flow in the line and create the harmonic losses. However, in a distributed network with several DGs of different types and with all kinds of variable nature loads, an optimal power balance in the system has to be achieved. This optimal objective, which results in minimal energy losses over a specific period of time,...

Micro-Grid Protection in Presence of Inverter Based Distributed Generation

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zarei, Fariborz (Author) ; Parniani, Mostafa (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this study, control and protection of low voltage microgrids have been analyzed. Studied microgrid takes the advantages of inverter based distributed generation. One of the most important issues in inverter based microgrids is the control of its distributed generation. Since, the low voltage networks have single phase loads and many imbalances, these imbalances can affect the control of IBDGs (inverter based distributed generations). This issue in the islanded mode of operation is the most important, because in this mode of operation, IBDGs control the network voltage and frequency.
In this thesis, the different control strategies of IBDGs are reviewed, and then modified to address...

Optimal Distributed Generation Allocation and Sizing Considering Operation Indices

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghanbari, Niloofar (Author) ; Mokhtari, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The need for independent power generation has been increased in recent years with the growing demand in micro grid systems. Losses in power systems are unavoidable. These losses occur in transmission to distributionnetworks from the generation sites to the end-user loads. Reduction of power losses has been one of the reasons for engineers to be attracted by micro grid systems which include small size independent power generation units. However, in a micro grid with several DGs of different types and with all kinds of loads of variable nature, an optimal power balance in the system has to be achieved. This optimal objective, which results in minimal energy losses over a specific period of...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zanganeh, Mohsen (Author) ; Mokhtari, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This dissertation studies the operation of the power sharing system in a micro-grid (MG) which includes a synchronous generator and the converter based distributed generation (DG) units. Increasing advent of MGs and the huge penetration of DGs to the existing power systems require comprehensive studies on the interactions between synchronous generators and converter based DGs for the sharing of power during and after the occurrence of different disturbances such as load changing. Thus, this project discusses existing control methods which can be used to share the power between a synchronous generator and converter based DGs. Then, a new control strategy is proposed in order to enhance the...
