Network structure and mechanical properties of polydimethylsiloxane filled with nanodiamond – Effect of degree of silanization of nanodiamond

    , Article Composites Science and Technology ; Volume 142 , 2017 , Pages 227-234 ; 02663538 (ISSN) Hajiali, F ; Shojaei, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Reinforcement of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was investigated using untreated nanodiamond (uND) and silane functionalized ND (sND) at various degrees of silanization. Scanning electron microscopy revealed an improved dispersion of ND in PDMS by silanization. The incorporation of uND and sNDs enhanced tensile strength up to 45% and 70%, respectively; however, greater improvement was observed for sNDs at very low concentrations, e.g. 0.2 wt%. The much improvement in crosslinking density, analyzed by Flory-Rehner model and Mooney-Rivlin plot, and interfacial interaction, characterized by Kraus and Cunneen-Russell plots, was also observed for sNDs. Interestingly, it was found that the extent of...

Characterization of silicon surface elastic constants based on different interatomic potentials

    , Article Thin Solid Films ; Volume 626 , 2017 , Pages 104-109 ; 00406090 (ISSN) Nejat Pishkenari, H ; Rezaei, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Mechanical properties of materials are an important factor in designing nanoscale systems. Several researches and experiments have shown that the mechanical properties of the nano-scale materials are different from those of bulk. One of the major reasons for this difference is that the ratio of surface to volume increases at the nano-scale, and the effects of free surfaces become very important. In this paper, we have measured the surface elastic constants of silicon crystalline structure using different interatomic potentials. The potentials employed here are EDIP (Environment-Dependent Interatomic Potential), Stillinger-Weber and Tersoff, and also different crystalline orientations are...

Improvement in the mechanical properties of Al/SiC nanocomposites fabricated by severe plastic deformation and friction stir processing

    , Article International Journal of Minerals, Metallurgy and Materials ; Volume 24, Issue 3 , 2017 , Pages 297-308 ; 16744799 (ISSN) Sarkari Khorrami, M ; Kazeminezhad, M ; Miyashita, Y ; Kokabi, A. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Severely deformed aluminum sheets were processed by friction stir processing (FSP) with SiC nanoparticles under different conditions to improve the mechanical properties of both the stir zone and the heat affected zone (HAZ). In the case of using a simple probe and the same rotational direction (RD) of the FSP tool between passes, at least three FSP passes were required to obtain the appropriate distribution of nanoparticles. However, after three FSP passes, fracture occurred outward from the stir zone during transverse tensile tests; thus, the strength of the specimen was significantly lower than that of the severely deformed base material because of the softening phenomenon in the HAZ. To...

Improvement of non-aqueous colloidal gas aphron-based drilling fluids properties: role of hydrophobic nanoparticles

    , Article Journal of Natural Gas Science and Engineering ; Volume 42 , 2017 , Pages 1-12 ; 18755100 (ISSN) Hassani, A. H ; Ghazanfari, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Application of the colloidal gas aphrons (CGAs) in minimizing formation damage by plugging pore mechanism is now wildly accepted due to numerous successful field experience. One of the pivotal factors which affects the pore blockage ability of micro-bubbles is their stability. This experimental study tries to investigate the possible synergistic effect of nanoparticles on improving the stability and other properties of non-aqueous CGA drilling fluids, in both bulk and porous media. In particular, two types of hydrophobic nanoparticles including silicon dioxide nanopowder coated with 2 wt% Silane and nanoclay, in presence of a treated version of bentonite (Bentone 34) as a stabilizer and...

Influence of ambient and cryogenic temperature on friction stir processing of severely deformed aluminum with SiC nanoparticles

    , Article Journal of Alloys and Compounds ; Volume 718 , 2017 , Pages 361-372 ; 09258388 (ISSN) Sarkari Khorrami, M ; Kazeminezhad, M ; Miyashita, Y ; Saito, N ; Kokabi, A. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The texture, microstructure, and mechanical properties of severely deformed aluminum subjected to friction stir processing (FSP) with SiC nanoparticles under ambient and cryogenic temperatures are comprehensively investigated. Even one pass of FSP in the ambient temperature results in the formation of quite large grain structure with random texture in the heat affected zone (HAZ). It suggests the occurrence of static recrystallization and subsequent grain growth because of the appreciable strain stored within the base metal. One FSP pass under condition of cryogenic temperature causes to the development of bimodal grain size distribution in HAZ, including the elongated grains with interior...

Mechanism of Al-Si codeposition on In738LC through single-step diffusion process

    , Article International Journal of Surface Science and Engineering ; Volume 11, Issue 1 , 2017 , Pages 1-11 ; 1749785X (ISSN) Nikzad, S ; Abdi, M ; Rastegari, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The out-of-pack cementation method was applied to coat the Nickel-based super alloy IN738LC with Si-modified aluminide. Different mixtures of the pack containing pure Al, Si, alumina powders as an inert filler, and NH4Cl as a halide salt activator were used for co-deposition at 950 and 1,050°C. The results showed although the amount of subhalide vapour pressures of Al and Si were equal at 1,050°C, Al atoms diffused only after Si atoms had been deposited. Before heat treatment, the coating thickness formed by the pack containing 2.3 wt.% Al was 6 μm more than that containing 3.5 wt.% Al. After heat treatment, thickening coatings formed within the pack containing 2.3 wt.% Al was less than that...
