- Abstract:
- Adsorption of acetone vapors on mixture of silica gel and activated carbon was studied. Adsorption is defined as the attraction adsorbate (liquid or gas) particles onto the surface of a solid (porous solid). Most of the experimental works are adsorption of a one or more component on an adsorbent. Presence of two or more adsorbents together may effect on adsorption rate, uptake and thermodynamic conditions. When we have limitation in using a kind of adsorbent, these results can be helpful. There are several motivating reasons for the study of adsorption on adsorbent mixtures. During the adsorbent manufacturing process, multiple batches may differ slightly from each other(and from the customer specification) with regard to their kinetic and equilibrium properties. The manufacturer then blends batches in such a way as to satisfy the customer specification and minimize their adsorbent losses. The dependence of the properties of the mixture on the properties of the individual components must be known for this blending process to be performed correctly. Secondly, adsorbents may be blended to mitigate thermal effects and to offset the high capital cost of new exotic adsorbents. A constant volume reservoir equiped with a pressure gague was used to do adsorption process. Acetone vapors used as adsorbate. Experiments were done by mixtures of adsorbents with similar amounts. Acetone vapors entered reservoir by nitrogen as a carrier. System’s pressure was recorded during experiments. After equilibrium adsorbents were weighed. These experiments were repeated in three different temperatures. Adsorption uptake of each adsorbent and mixture of them was calculated from pressure and weight. From these data, equilibrium and isotherm diagrams were plotted and correlated with the Freundlich isotherm. Also to compare adsorption rate of mixed adsorbent and each adsorbents, we reported adsorption uptake vs. time and calculated adsorption rate constants from linear driving force model.
